How to Pair a PS5 Controller (Console, PC, and Phone)

Pairing a DualSense to a PS5 takes one cable and one button the first time, and one two-button hold for every controller after that. Pairing it to a PC or phone uses the same hidden combo. All three methods, below.

First Controller (or a Re-Pair): The Cable Method

  1. Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB-C cable.
  2. Press the PS button (the logo between the sticks).
  3. Done; the console binds it to your profile. You can unplug and play wirelessly.

This is also the fix when a controller stops being recognized: cable plus PS button re-pairs it.

Adding a Second Controller Wirelessly

  1. On the PS5 (using the working controller): Settings → Accessories → General → Bluetooth Accessories.
  2. On the new controller: hold the PS button and the Create button (the small one left of the touchpad) together until the light bar flashes rapidly; that’s pairing mode.
  3. Select the controller when it appears on screen, and assign it to a profile.

Pairing to PC, Mac, or Phone

The same pairing-mode combo works everywhere:

  1. Hold PS + Create until the light flashes.
  2. On the other device, open Bluetooth settings and select “DualSense Wireless Controller.”
  3. On PC, Steam recognizes it natively (enable PlayStation controller support in Steam’s controller settings for full features); many non-Steam games prefer it wired.

One controller, one home: pairing to a new device unpairs it from the old one, so returning to PS5 means the cable-plus-PS-button handshake again (two seconds, not a chore).

Troubleshooting

  • Won’t pair: hold the tiny reset button in the hole on the controller’s back (near the Sony logo) for 5 seconds with a pin, then cable-pair fresh.
  • Flashing but never connecting: forget the device in the other machine’s Bluetooth list first, then re-pair.
  • Lag on PC: prefer USB-C wired or a dedicated Bluetooth 5 adapter; motherboard Bluetooth varies wildly.
