Dawn of War 4: What Crusade Mode Is and When It Arrives

Crusade mode is the replayable conquest mode in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV: you move a persistent Strike Force across a turn-based map of Kronus, then fight the hard battles as classic real-time Dawn of War skirmishes, with each Crusade lasting around eight to ten hours. It is not in the launch game on December 3, 2026; it arrives later as a free update, the first drop on the Year One roadmap, which currently places it at the start of 2027.

Below is how a Crusade plays, how it compares to Dark Crusade, who gets it, and what is still unknown, verified against KING Art’s Steam announcements and the Steam store roadmap as of October 24, 2026. The mode is not out yet, so details can still change.

What Crusade Mode Is

KING Art announced Crusade at the Warhammer Skulls showcase in May, in a post titled “Crusade mode returns.” The studio says the mode “had its origins in the first game’s Dark Crusade expansion nearly 20 years ago,” and describes it this way: “you can think of Crusade mode as Dawn of War IV’s endless mode.”

The key points from that announcement:

  • It is replayable. You can play Crusades “again and again, and they’ll always play out differently each time you jump in.”
  • Each Crusade belongs to a Commander. Every Commander’s Crusade has its own goals and starting conditions, plus “a host of combat advantages and disadvantages.”
  • A typical Crusade takes around eight to ten hours to complete, according to KING Art.
  • It sits beside the story, not inside it. KING Art calls it “a more open-ended kind of gameplay that provides the perfect companion to our epic story-based campaign.”

How a Crusade Plays

A Crusade has two layers: a strategic turn on the world map, and real-time battles when you attack.

The Turn-Based World Map

The map is a set of territories spread across Kronus. On each turn you get a limited number of Action Points to move your Strike Force into neutral and enemy territory, chasing your overall Crusade objective. Each territory comes with its own rewards and challenges, so a lot of the mode is deciding which fights are worth the points.

KING Art gave one simple example: attacking a territory costs two Action Points, but a particular target might reward you with two Action Points if you win. Beat it and you get your points back, which stretches the rest of that turn. The studio’s advice is to plan ahead and “wring every last drop of value” from your moves before the enemy responds with its own.

Real-Time Battles and Auto-Resolve

Not every attack turns into a full battle. The game tracks the relative strength of your Strike Force and its target. If you are so much stronger that the result is a foregone conclusion, the fight resolves automatically to keep the pace up. The tougher encounters play out “just like traditional Dawn of War skirmishes,” with base building, resource points and your army on the field.

Strike Forces That Carry Over

This is the big difference from a one-off Skirmish. In a Crusade, your units keep their status between battles: they earn XP, level up, and keep the skills and Wargear they pick up for the length of that Crusade. Battle rewards also scale with how well you do, so if the enemy was favored and you won convincingly anyway, KING Art says you will be “suitably rewarded.”

Requisition

Conquering territory earns Requisition. You spend it on two things:

  • Your territories. Requisition improves the defenses and economies of the regions you hold, which makes them harder for your opponent to take back.
  • Your Strike Forces. It heals and improves your increasingly powerful units between battles.

When Crusade Mode Arrives

Crusade is not part of the launch game. KING Art’s October 21 Game Overview Trailer post lists it among the post-launch content: “Year One bringing free updates, including Crusade Mode, new maps, modes, Commanders, and the Mission Editor.”

The Year One roadmap on the Steam store page puts Crusade Mode first among the free updates, alongside Map Pack I. On that graphic the timeline starts in 2027, and Crusade sits at the very beginning, ahead of the spring marker. No month or day has been announced, and the roadmap carries the note “DLC and release windows subject to change.”

The window has already moved once. The original roadmap from May, when Dawn of War 4 was due on September 17, put Crusade in fall 2026. KING Art then delayed the game to December 3, and the roadmap on the Steam store now starts in 2027.

One line in the May Crusade post reads differently: it says “Five of our Commanders will have their own dedicated Crusade when the game launches,” with more Crusades added free after that. Every later official post and the current roadmap list Crusade itself as a post-launch update, so the most likely reading is that the mode will arrive with five Commanders’ Crusades. KING Art has not said which five.

More Crusade content is already on the roadmap. The second and fourth free updates add Last Stand and Crusade content for the Necron Commander Lord Ahmnok and the Ork Commander Guzcutta, which KING Art’s May post calls “new Commander scenarios for Last Stand and Crusade.”

Is Crusade Mode Free

Yes. Crusade is one of the free updates, so everyone who owns Dawn of War 4 gets it, whichever edition they bought. The Commander Edition adds the two paid story DLCs, but it does not lock Crusade away. Steam’s listing for the Year 1 Expansion says the “new modes, map packs, playable Commanders and a Mission Editor will be added in a series of free updates.”

Will It Be Like Dark Crusade

In spirit, yes, and KING Art built it on that idea. Dark Crusade, the 2006 standalone expansion to the first Dawn of War, had a non-linear campaign on Kronus: you picked one of seven factions and conquered the planet territory by territory on a turn-based map, fighting real-time battles for contested ground, with your commander’s wargear and an honor guard of units carrying from battle to battle. Dawn of War 4 even returns to the same planet, about 200 years after Dark Crusade.

Based on what KING Art has described, Dawn of War 4’s version changes a few things:

  • Action Points decide how far you can push each turn, and some victories refund them.
  • Lopsided fights auto-resolve, so you only play the battles that matter.
  • Rewards scale with performance, rather than being fixed per territory.
  • Crusades are tied to Commanders, each with set goals, starting conditions, strengths and weaknesses.
  • Each run is shorter and repeatable, at around eight to ten hours, rather than one long campaign.

The faction count is smaller at launch. Dawn of War 4 ships with four factions (Space Marines, with the Blood Ravens and Dark Angels, plus Orks, Necrons and the Adeptus Mechanicus), and a fifth playable faction is due with the paid Aftermath expansion in 2027.

Can You Play Crusade Mode in Co-op or Multiplayer

KING Art has not said. The Crusade announcement describes your Strike Force against enemy forces and never mentions a second human player, and Dark Crusade’s own campaign was single-player. Until KING Art addresses it, treat co-op and multiplayer Crusade as unconfirmed. If you want to play with friends at launch, our Dawn of War 4 co-op guide covers the modes that do support it: the campaign, Skirmish, Last Stand and team multiplayer.

What to Play Until Crusade Arrives

The launch game has the four faction campaigns (more than 70 missions), Skirmish, Last Stand and multiplayer on 30 maps. For a turn-based strategy map wrapped around real-time battles in Warhammer today, Total War is the closest match; our guide to every End Times Legendary Lord in Total War: Warhammer III covers its newest DLC. Every Dawn of War 4 guide is on our Warhammer 40,000 hub, and the launch is on our upcoming game releases list.
