WoW Forever: Can You Dual Spec? Answered

Yes, you can dual spec in World of Warcraft: Forever: Dual Specialization becomes available at level 40, which lets one character keep two talent builds, such as a damage build for questing and a tank or healing build for dungeons. Blizzard has not announced what it costs, and its developers said in October that they were still discussing whether 40 is the right level.

Below is what Blizzard has confirmed, the hint that it could unlock earlier, what dual spec has cost in the past, and how to switch roles before level 40. Everything is verified against Blizzard’s class deep dives, its beta development notes and the official WoW Forever Podcast as of October 29, ahead of the November 4 launch.

What Blizzard Has Confirmed

Blizzard’s class deep dives, published September 30, carry the same line for every class. From the Hunter and Druid deep dive: “To change your talents (including Legacy talents), you’ll need to visit a class trainer in one of the major cities. Dual Specialization also becomes available at level 40.”

Talents themselves start at level 10, with milestone talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points, per the Priest and Warrior deep dive. So you spend 30 levels on one build before dual spec arrives.

Could Dual Spec Unlock Before Level 40?

Possibly. On the October 8 episode of the official WoW Forever Podcast, a Blizzard developer said dual spec “will come online at level 40 currently,” adding: “We’re talking about maybe what the right level for that to actually enable is, but currently it’s set to 40.” The panel joked about “a cheeky 30,” but nothing was decided, and Blizzard has not announced a change since, so plan around 40.

Players have pushed hard for an earlier unlock. Beta threads on Blizzard’s forums asked for it at level 10, 20, 25 and 30, mostly from healers and tanks who did not want to quest in a group spec. If Blizzard lowers the level, we will update this guide.

What Dual Spec Might Cost

Blizzard has not said. History gives a sense of scale but no promise: when dual spec first arrived in Wrath of the Lich King in 2009, it cost 1,000 gold from your class trainer at level 40, and later expansions cut the price sharply. Beta players on the forums expect a gold cost in WoW Forever and have asked for it to be affordable at 40, when many players are also saving for a faster mount.

Until Blizzard confirms a price, budget some gold as you approach 40 rather than spending everything on your mount the moment you ding.

Why Dual Spec Matters More in WoW Forever

Two changes make a second spec more valuable than in the original game:

  • Dungeons expect real roles. On the same podcast, the developer said dual spec at 40 “really does kind of open up some doors for us,” because “there’s more of a possibility that someone could be a dedicated healer, a dedicated tank.” Expect harder group content once players can carry a tank or healing build.
  • Dungeon leveling is slower. Blizzard’s Aggrend wrote on the official forums on October 8 that after the beta’s XP changes, “the leveling rates in dungeons will be very close, if not equal to the speed you can level with optimal questing play.” Most players will quest for much of the journey, so healers and tanks will want a damage build for the open world and a group build for dungeons.

Hybrid classes gain the most. Paladins, for example, now get Seal of Fury as a tank-focused seal for Protection, per Blizzard’s deep dive panel recap.

How to Switch Roles Before Level 40

Until dual spec unlocks, you change roles by resetting your talents:

  1. Go to a major city. Talent resets happen at your class trainer there, and the same trainer resets Legacy talents.
  2. Pay the reset fee. During the beta, Blizzard’s development notes set the fee at 1 silver if you had not reset recently, and said it was “temporary for the Beta only.” The fee climbs after each reset and drops back after an hour.
  3. Rebuild your talents for the role you need.

Beta players also reported that Druid trainers in Moonglade could teach spells but not reset talents, so Horde Druids had to travel to Thunder Bluff. If you play a hybrid, reset only when you need a different role, and plan the build before the trip.

The Talented Legacy perk helps a little too: Blizzard’s Legacy system overview says it “allows players to unlock talent points up to 5 levels lower than normal,” which gets alts to key talents sooner. It does not change when dual spec unlocks.

How Dual Spec Has Worked Before

When dual spec arrived in Wrath of the Lich King, you bought it once from your class trainer and could then switch between two saved talent builds, each with its own action bars, anywhere out of combat. Blizzard has not described how WoW Forever’s version works, so treat that as the likely shape rather than a promise. One forum suggestion asked Blizzard to allow swaps only at a trainer; Blizzard has not responded.
