Space Marine 2: How to Get a Cape

Three Space Marines standing in a cathedral in Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2

You get capes in Space Marine 2 by earning them through Ordeals, chiefly the hard Trials of Resolve Ordeals Saber added in Patch 13.0, or through cosmetic DLC packs that include a cloak. Once earned, a cape goes in your class’s Cloak wargear slot in the Armouring Hall, and since Wargear 2.0 most capes can be shared across classes, with one big exception: the Bulwark cannot wear a cape yet.

Below is every way to unlock a cape, which classes can wear one, step-by-step equipping and painting, and the fixes for a cape that will not show or save. Everything is verified against Saber Interactive’s and Focus Entertainment’s official patch notes and community updates, up to Hotfix 15.2 on October 20, 2026.

How Capes Work Now

In Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, capes are wargear: armour accessories such as cloaks, tabards, robes and Iron Halos. At launch each was locked to certain classes. Saber opened them up over three patches:

  • Wargear 2.0 (Patch 13.0, May 2026) let each class “wear multiple wargear at once, such as capes, iron halos and sensor antennas,” with the catch that “players will have to earn their wargear.”
  • Wargear 2.01 (Patch 14.0, July 2026) added a third wargear slot to some classes “so tabards and capes could be equipped at the same time.”
  • Wargear 2.2 (Patch 15.0, October 2026) split the cloth slot into separate Cloth and Cloak slots, so a tabard and a cape no longer compete, and made wargear paintable in its own slot.

Focus’s April 2026 community update spelled out the sharing rules: “you won’t have to grind for every single wargear, some will be shared right away. However, lore restrictions still apply.” Its example is the Iron Halo, which Snipers cannot equip.

Every Way to Get a Cape

1. Trials of Resolve Ordeals. These “Ultragrind” Ordeals arrived in Patch 13.0, and Focus said “there are new cloak and Iron Halo items that can be unlocked through these Ultragrind Ordeals.” Each Ordeal has up to three tiers. Six of them are class-specific challenges to complete missions on Absolute difficulty, and Hotfix 13.1 lowered their tiers from 10, 30 and 100 missions to 10, 25 and 50. Check the Ordeals menu for each Ordeal’s exact reward and condition before you start grinding.

2. Capes shared from another class. Some wargear unlocks across classes as soon as you own it, so a cape you earned on one class can appear on another. Focus says lore limits still apply, so not every cape fits every class.

3. Cosmetic and Champion DLC. Several paid packs include cloaks. Focus’s June 2026 community update listed the Raptors Cosmetic Pack as including “a Cloak, plus an additional Cloak variant covering the top of the backpack.” Patch 15.0 added the Salamander Champion Cloak for the Assault, and Focus lists Champion Pack wargear that works on other classes: the Raven Guard Champion Pack’s wargear, for example, works as a cape on the Sniper. Our Season Pass 3 guide covers the current packs.

4. The Sniper’s own cloaks. Cloaks are part of the Sniper’s look, and Patch 15.0 gave Sniper cloaks their own camouflage patterns.

Which Classes Can Wear a Cape

Most classes can wear capes since Wargear 2.0, but two are limited:

  • Bulwark: not yet. Saber’s Patch 14.0 notes say “capes for Bulwark are also in the works, however it will take a bit more time (not in Patch 15), since robes need to be removed from chest pieces first.” Game director Dmitry Grigorenko said in his community Q&A that letting Bulwarks swap robes and tabards separately is “currently planned in Patch 16,” with the usual warning that plans might change.
  • Techmarine: limited. Grigorenko said more customization is coming, but “Techmarines usually do not wear expensive looking things,” so do not expect elaborate wargear on the class.

Step-by-Step: How to Equip and Paint a Cape

  1. Go to the Armouring Hall on the Battle Barge and select the class.
  2. Open armour customisation and use a custom armour set. When Wargear 2.0 launched, Saber listed a known issue where “Wargears are not available if the player selects an Armour Set Template,” so a custom set is the reliable route.
  3. Open the Cloak slot (separate from the Cloth slot since Patch 15.0) and pick any cape you have unlocked.
  4. Paint it in its own slot. Patch 15.0 added new cloth and cloak colours and colouring support for the Vermillion Cloak and Sable Cloak, among others. Focus called cape recolouring “something we should have done a long time ago.”
  5. Save the set and equip it before launching a mission.

Cape Not Showing or Not Saving?

  • Update the game. Hotfix 15.1 fixed “an issue where cloth customization did not save between restarts” and fixed hoods and certain robes that could not be recoloured. Hotfix 15.2 is the current build.
  • Check the class. If you are on a Bulwark, the cape slot is not there yet, as above.
  • Check the lore limit. A cape you own may not be allowed on every class.
  • Switch from a premade set to a custom one if the wargear slots are missing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you unlock capes in Space Marine 2? Mainly through the Trials of Resolve Ordeals added in Patch 13.0, plus cosmetic DLC packs that include cloaks. Some capes are shared across classes once you own them.

Can the Bulwark wear a cape? Not yet. Saber says Bulwark capes are in the works but need robes split from chest pieces first.

Can you change your cape’s colour? Yes, since Patch 15.0. Capes and cloaks are painted in their own slot, with new colours added in that patch.

Can you wear a cape and a tabard together? Yes. Patch 15.0 split the Cloth and Cloak slots, so a tabard and a cape can be equipped at the same time.

Why can’t I equip a cape on my armour? Use a custom armour set rather than a premade template, and check that the class is allowed that cape.
