Lightyear Frontier: Where to Find Nickel

A red farming mech among giant alien plants and shallow water in a colorful Lightyear Frontier valley

Nickel Ore comes from Nickel Deposits, and on the map as it stood before 1.0 they sit on sandy ground beside water, mostly along the eastern side of the Outset Grasslands where you start. The best spots are a beach in the far northeast of the grasslands, sandy patches along the rivers, and a small sandy beach between the grasslands and Hexagon Valley. The 1.0 release on November 4, 2026, tweaked resource placement across the world, so use those spots as a starting point and let the new Resource Scanner confirm them.

Lightyear Frontier describes Nickel Ore in game as “a rare metal,” and it is one of the first metals a new farm goes looking for. Below: where to look, why older nickel maps send you to the wrong places, the 1.0 tools that find it for you, and how to keep a steady supply once you have found a good spot.

Where to Find Nickel

Nickel follows water. On the map that arrived with the Shifting Gears update of June 2025, these are the places to check first:

Where What to look for
Far northeast of the Outset Grasslands A beach with nickel on its sandy stretches
Rivers through the grasslands Sandy spots along the banks, including the river beside the closed-off area
Between the grasslands and Hexagon Valley A small sandy beach with Nickel Ore
Southeast edge of the starting region Deposits around the edges of the zone

The pattern is consistent: if you are standing on sand next to a river, lake or the coast on the east side of the starting region, you are in nickel country. FRAME BREAK’s 1.0 patch notes say it “tweaked resource placement across the world, adding additional mineral and plants,” without listing what moved, so treat these spots as where to start and confirm them with the Resource Scanner below.

Deposits come in two sizes. Small deposits drop Nickel Ore when you break them. Since the Country Roads update, bigger mineral deposits break into chunks instead, which you can smash by hand or carry home for a better return (more on that below).

Why Old Nickel Maps Are Wrong

The Shifting Gears update of June 4, 2025, replaced the entire world with a new, larger map. FRAME BREAK’s Shifting Gears notes list an “overhauled game world,” “new minerals” and a split between respawning and one-time resource nodes. Any nickel map or location list written before June 2025 describes a world that only exists on Steam’s Legacy branch now. Regions such as the Meadows and Pine Heights belong to that old map.

1.0 also adds two late-game regions, the Sandswept Highlands and the Hollow Marsh, which FRAME BREAK says bring “new crops, minerals” to the world. The developer has not said which minerals, so the eastern grasslands remain the reliable early answer.

How to Find Nickel Faster in 1.0

1.0 adds the best nickel-hunting tools the game has had:

  • The Resource Scanner. Open the Map and use the new Resource Scanner. The 1.0 quality of life post says it “will point you in the direction of resources.”
  • The map’s Resources list. Each region’s discovered resources are listed on the world map. Once you have found nickel in a region, it shows there, so you know which region to return to.
  • Stamps with text. Place a map stamp on every deposit you find and label it. In multiplayer, everyone in the session can read your notes.

Combine the three: scan, break what you find, and stamp the spot before you leave.

How to Mine and Farm Nickel

Finding one deposit is the start. Keeping nickel coming takes a few systems FRAME BREAK added over Early Access:

  1. Look for respawning nodes. Since Shifting Gears, resource nodes are either respawnable or one-time, “with new art to distinguish the two.” Respawning deposits are the ones worth stamping. FRAME BREAK ties the repopulation of plants and minerals to the game’s day system.
  2. Hit the Weak Points. Per the 1.0 patch notes, Weak Points now appear when you strike targets with the Spike Saw, and hitting them gives a 25% damage bonus, so deposits break faster.
  3. Haul the chunks home. Since the Country Roads update, your mech can pick up and carry large objects like rock chunks. FRAME BREAK says processing them in the Mineral Crusher gives “tons of additional resources compared to breaking them with your tools.” 1.0 adds a Mineral Crusher II as well.
  4. Build a Mineral Extractor. Placed next to a large mineral deposit, it generates additional minerals each day. FRAME BREAK pitched it as the answer to “mineral scarcity.” One beside a good nickel deposit saves a lot of trips.
  5. Use Trailers. 1.0 makes Trailers more stable and reduces the speed penalty when towing, so a loaded trailer behind your mech moves a lot of ore at once.

What Nickel Is Used For

FRAME BREAK has not published a recipe list, and 1.0’s Milestone overhaul moved many upgrades and constructs around, so check which recipes call for Nickel Ore at your crafting stations rather than counting on an old list.

Nickel was also a community goal: a Research Initiative in February 2026 asked players worldwide to contribute 150,000 Nickel Ore to unlock a Mod Chip recipe. 1.0 removed Research Initiatives and moved their rewards elsewhere, and Prometheus Station now offers Research Deliveries that give blueprints for new mech mods.

Tips for Nickel Runs

  • Bring the mech. Breaking deposits as the Exofarmer is slow, and the mech carries far more.
  • Build an outpost by the beach. If your farm is far from the eastern grasslands, a second Farm Center near the nickel beaches turns a long trip into a short one.
  • Go with friends. In co-op, storage is shared, so a friend can mine while you farm. Our guide to whether Lightyear Frontier is multiplayer explains how sessions work.
  • Gather while you are out. Red crystal and feathers are two more materials worth collecting on the same trips. Our guides to red crystal and feathers cover those, and every guide is on our Lightyear Frontier hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to find nickel in Lightyear Frontier? Sandy ground next to water on the east side of the Outset Grasslands, with a beach in the far northeast of the grasslands and a small beach between the grasslands and Hexagon Valley the spots to check first. 1.0 tweaked resource placement, so confirm them with the Resource Scanner.

Why can’t I find nickel where older maps show it? The Shifting Gears update of June 2025 replaced the whole map. Locations from before then belong to the old world on the Legacy branch.

Does nickel respawn in Lightyear Frontier? Respawning deposits do. Since Shifting Gears, nodes are either respawning or one-time, with different art for each, and minerals repopulate over in-game days.

How do I get more nickel from each deposit? Carry large chunks home and process them in the Mineral Crusher, and build a Mineral Extractor next to a large deposit for extra minerals every day.

Is there a way to locate nickel automatically? Yes, in 1.0. Open the Map and use the Resource Scanner, which points you toward resources.
