Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered: How to Unlock Sun Quan

Sun Quan raises his sword in his official character art for Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered

To unlock Sun Quan in Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered, play the Battle of Hefei on the Wu side in Musou Mode and follow its events to the end: let Zhang Liao defeat Taishi Ci, ride to Sun Quan so he jumps the broken bridge, save him when Zhang Liao returns, clear out Cao Cao’s officers, then let Sun Quan’s charge make Cao Cao retreat. Do not defeat Cao Cao yourself. Sun Quan joins the roster after the results, on any difficulty.

It is the longest unlock chain in the game, and one wrong kill ends it. Koei Tecmo has not published unlock conditions for DYNASTY WARRIORS 3: Complete Edition Remastered, so the steps follow the 2001 original, and the same chain unlocks him in the remaster. Every other guide is on our Dynasty Warriors hub.

The Unlock Condition

  • Stage: Battle of Hefei (He Fei in the original’s English release), not the Siege of Hefei Castle.
  • Side: Wu.
  • Mode: Musou Mode. In the original, Sun Quan only unlocked there, and Koei Tecmo’s description of the remaster’s Musou Mode is where it says new officers unlock by meeting special conditions in battle.
  • Difficulty: Any.
  • Requirement: Cao Cao retreats after meeting Sun Quan’s charge, with no officers left to protect him.

Sun Quan is a Wu officer on Koei Tecmo’s official character list, and once unlocked he plays the Wu Musou Mode story.

Step-by-Step: How to Unlock Sun Quan

  1. Start the Battle of Hefei as a Wu officer in Musou Mode. A strong officer helps, but early on you should do almost nothing. Only fight officers who get too close to Sun Quan.
  2. Let Zhang Liao defeat Taishi Ci. Early in the battle, Zhang Liao meets Taishi Ci and kills him with arrows. Do not save Taishi Ci and do not attack Zhang Liao yet.
  3. Follow Sun Quan to the broken bridge. With Taishi Ci gone, the Wu army falls back and Sun Quan retreats to the southeast, where he gets cornered north of the river. Ride up beside him on the north side of the broken bridge and he jumps it, taking your officer with him.
  4. Let Zhang Liao withdraw. On the Wu side, Zhang Liao leaves the battlefield on his own for a short while.
  5. Save Sun Quan from Zhang Liao. A little later, Zhang Liao returns and attacks Sun Quan south of the river. Defeat him. This also unlocks Zhang Liao and drops the Buckler, a red item that means guarding never knocks you off balance.
  6. Defeat Cao Cao’s officers. Clear the Wei officers that remain around Cao Cao’s camp. Gan Ning also launches a surprise attack on Cao Cao around this point.
  7. Return to Sun Quan. Once Cao Cao has no officers left, go back to Sun Quan and he orders an all-out charge on Cao Cao’s camp.
  8. Let the charge finish the battle. Escort Sun Quan to Cao Cao. When they meet and Cao Cao has no officers left, Cao Cao retreats and you win. Do not defeat Cao Cao yourself. Sun Quan unlocks after the results screen.

What If Sun Jian Is in Command?

In the 2001 original, the Wu commander at Hefei could change depending on whose story you were playing, so Sun Jian may be in charge there instead of Sun Quan. If he is, treat Sun Jian as the commander and follow the same steps.

If the commander gets stuck on the way to the bridge, clear the soldiers around him and keep close.

Why Sun Quan Did Not Unlock

  • Taishi Ci survived. If you save him, the retreat and bridge events never start.
  • You defeated Cao Cao. The win has to come from Cao Cao retreating when Sun Quan reaches him, not from your officer defeating him.
  • Cao Cao still had officers. He only retreats when none are left, so clear them before the charge arrives.
  • You played Free Mode. Use Musou Mode, as in the original.
  • Your officer’s story skipped Hefei. Musou Mode stage lists differ from officer to officer. If the Battle of Hefei is not in the story you are playing, switch to a Wu officer whose story includes it.

Sun Quan’s Fourth Weapon: Master Wolf

Once he is unlocked, Sun Quan’s fourth weapon in the original is Master Wolf:

  • Stage: Siege of Hefei Castle, Wu side (Sun Quan’s forces).
  • Difficulty: Hard or higher, playing as Sun Quan, as with every fourth weapon in the remaster.
  • Condition: Defeat Zhang He, then pick up the precious item, which sat east of the pond in the center of Wei’s castle in the original.

Koei Tecmo has not published fourth weapon conditions, but the remaster keeps the original’s Master Wolf method. Our elements guide covers moving a weapon’s element with Weapon Fusion.

Tips Most Players Miss

  • Two officers, one run. Defeating Zhang Liao in step 5 unlocks him too, so a single Wu run at Hefei can add both Sun Quan and Zhang Liao.
  • Gan Ning comes from the Wei side. Our Gan Ning guide covers the same map from the other side, where his surprise attack is the unlock.
  • Easy keeps the chain alive. Sun Quan has to survive the whole chain, so Easy is the safest setting for it. Our difficulty guide explains how to switch.
  • Check the full roster. Our character unlock guide lists every other officer, and our item guide covers the Buckler and the other red items.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you unlock Sun Quan in Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered? Play the Battle of Hefei on the Wu side in Musou Mode. Let Zhang Liao defeat Taishi Ci, ride with Sun Quan across the broken bridge, save him from Zhang Liao, defeat Cao Cao’s officers, then let Sun Quan’s charge make Cao Cao retreat.

Can you unlock Sun Quan in Free Mode? Use Musou Mode. In the original it only counted there, and Koei Tecmo describes officer unlocks as part of the remaster’s Musou Mode.

Should you kill Cao Cao at Hefei? No. Defeating Cao Cao yourself ends the battle the wrong way. The unlock needs Cao Cao to retreat when Sun Quan’s charge reaches him.

Does difficulty matter for unlocking Sun Quan? No. It works on any difficulty, and Easy makes it easier to keep the events on track.

Can you unlock Sun Quan if Sun Jian is the commander? Follow the same steps with Sun Jian as the commander, and stay close to him so soldiers do not hold up his retreat to the bridge.

Does the same run unlock Zhang Liao? It can. Defeat Zhang Liao when he returns to attack Sun Quan and he unlocks too, along with the Buckler item.
