Stronghold 4 will now launch into Steam Early Access on April 20, 2027, instead of December 7, 2026, Firefly Studios announced on November 3 in a Steam update. The studio says the extra months let it put more into the Early Access version before work moves on to 1.0.
The Details
Firefly gives its reason plainly: “The aim had always been to launch into Early Access with as much polished content as possible.” The delay follows Steam Next Fest in October, where the studio says the game was one of the most played demos.
The April release keeps everything Firefly planned for December:
- the full story campaign,
- custom skirmish mode,
- a skirmish trail,
- Free Build.
On top of that, it now adds:
- the economic campaign,
- quality of life improvements,
- “additional essential polish.”
Firefly also says the extra time lets it show off more of what is new in the game, naming medieval siegecraft, villages, and weather. The Steam page describes a 22-mission narrative campaign following Penryn of Wethel, a prequel set years before the original 2001 Stronghold, and a skirmish mode with eight CPU opponents at launch.
What This Means for Players
Anyone planning a December castle-building session has a longer wait, but the trade is a bigger first release: the economic campaign was not part of the December plan. Firefly says Early Access feedback will then shape version 1.0, and it wants demo feedback now, so this is the window to have a say.
The Skirmish and Free Build demo is still on the Steam store page, and Firefly is asking players to try it and send feedback. Our best Steam Next Fest demos list covers what the demo includes, and our Next Fest story has the rest of October’s demos.
