No, not legitimately. World of Warcraft: Forever has no WoW Token, so there is no Blizzard-approved way to turn real money into gold, and buying gold from a third-party seller breaks Blizzard’s rules. “Real money transactions (RMT) are not acceptable in World of Warcraft,” Blizzard’s community team wrote, and its penalties now reach the buyers as well as the sellers, up to permanent account closure.
Below we cover what Blizzard has said about the WoW Token, what happens to an account caught buying gold, the two traps that catch players who never visited a gold site (gifts from strangers and carries paid through a middleman), the GDKP rule, and the ways to get gold that carry no risk. Everything comes from Blizzard’s official forum posts and the WoW: Forever Podcast, checked November 6, two days after launch.
Is There a WoW Token in WoW Forever?
No. Blizzard’s Classic team said at BlizzCon in September that there are no plans for a WoW Token or paid character boosts in Forever. Associate production director Clay Stone, interviewed by YouTuber Destin, explained the thinking simply: “you get better at the game by playing the game.” No plans is not a permanent promise, but nothing in Blizzard’s launch posts mentions a Token.
The WoW Token you may know belongs to modern World of Warcraft, and it still helps a Forever player in one way. A Token bought with modern WoW gold can be redeemed for 30 days of game time, and Blizzard says Forever “is included with an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time.” So gold in the modern game can pay for your Forever subscription. It cannot become Forever gold. Our guides to what WoW costs each month and whether WoW Forever is free cover the billing side.
What Happens If You Buy Gold
Blizzard has spelled this out in a run of posts on its official forums since the beta began:
- Buyers are now a target. On September 28, Blizzard wrote that “we will increasingly take action against buyers’ accounts. That means that we will remove the illicit gold from the recipient, and/or take further actions, which can include closing accounts.”
- Every link in the chain is covered. Its October 1 post on botting and RMT says “any account belonging to any player that is found to have participated in generating, selling, buying, or receiving illicit gold is subject to the gold being removed, account suspensions, or permanent account closures,” in the beta and in the live game.
- It has already happened at scale. Blizzard said on the third episode of its official WoW: Forever Podcast in October that it had closed more than 2,100 gold-buying accounts and nearly 1,600 gold-selling or botting accounts during the beta.
Temporary Economy Holds
Since mid-October, Blizzard can freeze the gold before it spreads. Its Temporary Economy Holds post says an account suspected of selling or receiving illicit gold can lose the use of “trade, mail, guild banks and the Auction House” while Blizzard investigates.
If you are playing normally, Blizzard says you are unlikely to ever see one. A hold that turns out to be a false alarm is removed automatically, and Blizzard says it leaves “no permanent strikes against your account unless also later proven to be RMT motivated.” Blizzard also says these systems will go to every version of World of Warcraft if they prove successful.
Two Traps for Players Who Never Bought Gold
Gold from strangers. Blizzard asks players “to be very cautious when it comes to accepting gifts from strangers or other one-sided transactions,” and warns that a recipient who “knew or should-have-known” the gold was not legitimate can face account action too. Blizzard said it would add a warning to trades with strangers that reads, in part, “Be wary of accepting gold from unknown or suspicious sources.” If someone you do not know offers gold for nothing, decline the trade.
Carries paid through a middleman. On October 27, Blizzard said it had acted against accounts that bought gold and had it delivered to a player selling a service, such as a raid carry. Its rule is simple: “players should always directly transfer gold from the player buying the carry (or other activity) to the player providing the carry.” Guilds that accept carry payments from an intermediate player risk having that gold removed.
Is GDKP Allowed in WoW Forever?
Not in North America or Europe. In GDKP raids, loot is auctioned to the raid for gold, which has long been a magnet for bought gold. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield said in Blizzard’s September 17 developer Q&A that GDKP would not be allowed in Forever, and associate production director Clay Stone later told the Taiwanese outlet 4Gamers that the ban covers North America and Europe, matching the rule Blizzard used for earlier Classic versions.
How to Get Gold Without Buying It
Every WoW Forever character started from nothing on November 4, so gold is tight for everyone early on. These ways carry no risk:
- Gather and sell. Herbalism, Mining and Skinning turn every trip into Auction House stock. Our guide to how professions work covers the limits, and our best professions for each class pairs them with your class.
- Fish and cook. Fishing and Cooking cost no profession slot, and every player needs food. See our guides to fishing and cooking.
- Disenchant. Enchanters turn unwanted gear into materials other players need; our disenchanting guide explains it.
- Spend less. Blizzard’s Legacy perks include Bartering (lower vendor prices), Frequent Flier (cheaper, faster flights) and Reagent Economy (no purchasable reagents for class abilities). Our Legacy Points guide shows how to earn the points.
- Earn recipes with Favor instead of gold. Merchant’s Favor buys new crafting recipes from your faction’s trade group; our Merchant’s Favor guide covers it.
Each ruleset has its own economy, so gold made on one cannot help a character on another; our guide to grouping across rulesets explains what stays separate. If a gold seller whispers or mails you, right-click their name and report them. Every WoW Forever guide we have is on our World of Warcraft hub.
