WoW Forever: Where to Get a Wand

A robed caster stands beneath two giant floating stone guardians at dusk in World of Warcraft: Forever

You get a wand in World of Warcraft: Forever from an Enchanter, who can craft one, from the Auction House, or as a quest reward or monster drop. No trainer sells the skill, because Mages, Priests and Warlocks, the only classes that can use wands, already know how.

The quickest route while leveling is to buy a crafted wand from the Auction House or ask an Enchanter, then swap to quest and dungeon wands as they come. Below we cover every source, the wands Enchanters can make in Forever, how to use one, and the beta changes that make wands play differently from the original game. Facts come from Blizzard’s beta development notes and its Deep Dive panel recap, checked November 6.

Who Can Use a Wand

Only Mages, Priests and Warlocks can equip wands, and all three start with the Wands weapon skill. That is why no weapon master teaches it. Warriors, Hunters and the other classes cannot learn wands at all, whatever trainer they visit.

Where to Get a Wand in WoW Forever

1. Enchanters (the earliest wands)

Wands are an Enchanting craft. Blizzard’s October 8 notes list these Enchanter-made wands, from the cheapest to the most valuable:

Wand Vendor sell price
Novice’s Practice Wand 5 copper
Lesser Magic Wand 1 silver 10 copper
Greater Magic Wand 2 silver
Lesser Mystic Wand 4 silver 50 copper
Greater Mystic Wand 6 silver
Twisted Nether Wand 10 silver
Dreambough Wand 15 silver
Lesser Eternal Wand 20 silver
Greater Eternal Wand 25 silver

The sell price says nothing about a wand’s power, but the list still helps. The Novice’s Practice Wand is, as its name says, the entry-level craft, and the Magic, Mystic and Eternal wands follow as an Enchanter’s skill grows. Crafted wands also sell to vendors for very little, so Enchanters who make them while leveling the skill would rather sell or trade them to players. That makes Enchanters the easiest wand source in the game: ask in your capital’s trade chat, or check the Auction House, where Enchanters list their spare wands.

2. Learn Enchanting yourself

If you plan to rely on a wand, Enchanting pays for itself. You can make your own wand early, upgrade it as your skill rises, and disenchant the green items you find for materials. Blizzard’s starter guide says profession trainers are in starting areas and major cities; ask a city guard if you cannot find one. Enchanting pairs naturally with Tailoring on a cloth class, which our best professions for each class guide covers, and our disenchanting guide explains how to turn spare gear into materials.

3. The Auction House

The Auction Houses in the capitals carry both crafted wands and wands that dropped for other players. Search for “wand” and filter by your level. Early on, a crafted Lesser or Greater Magic Wand is usually the cheapest real upgrade over having nothing in your ranged slot.

4. Quest rewards

Forever reworked quest rewards with casters in mind. Blizzard’s Deep Dive recap says quest rewards “have also been updated or expanded to support more classes and roles,” and its example is Mor’ladim’s quest in Duskwood, which now offers a spellcaster ring next to the old two-handed sword. Read every reward list before you choose. Quests that hand out wands were part of the original game, and Forever adds caster options to quests that used to offer only melee gear, as in that Duskwood example.

5. Monster and dungeon drops

Blizzard says every dungeon drop “has been re-examined” and that “hundreds of new rare-creature drops have been added.” Wands drop from dungeon bosses, rare creatures and ordinary mobs, and a lucky drop can carry you for a good stretch of levels. Rolling Need on a dungeon wand is fair game for the three wand classes.

How to Use a Wand

  1. Equip it in your ranged slot. Open your character sheet with C and drag the wand onto the ranged slot, or right-click it in your bags.
  2. Use Shoot. The Shoot ability fires the wand at your target and keeps firing until you move, cast or stop it. Put it on an action bar from your spellbook (P).
  3. Stand still. Since the October 15 build, wands need you to stand still for half a second before each shot, “matching early versions of World of Warcraft,” Blizzard says. You cannot fire a wand on the move.

Wands is a weapon skill like any other: it starts low and rises as you shoot, and a low skill means more misses against higher-level targets, so use the wand often while you level.

How Wands Changed in WoW Forever

  • No spell damage bonus. Blizzard’s September 24 notes say wands “no longer gain any additional damage from the user’s spell damage.” A wand hits for what its tooltip says, whatever gear you wear.
  • Your other weapons now carry spell power. The Deep Dive recap says spellcaster-oriented weapons “now grant spell damage and healing,” so your staff, dagger or off-hand does the scaling work instead. Do not skip a better staff because your wand is good.
  • The stand-still wind-up is back, as above, which makes wanding while kiting harder than in later versions of the game.

In practice the wand is still the classic way for a caster to finish off a mob without spending mana, which lets your mana regenerate for the next pull. If you are still choosing a caster, our best class for new players guide weighs all three wand users. Every Forever guide we have is on our World of Warcraft hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you buy a wand from a vendor in WoW Forever? We would not count on it. Enchanters, the Auction House, quest rewards and drops are the reliable sources, and Enchanting is the profession that makes them.

Which classes can use wands? Mages, Priests and Warlocks. All three start with the Wands skill, so there is nothing to train.

What is the first wand an Enchanter can make? The Novice’s Practice Wand, the entry-level wand on Blizzard’s list of Enchanter-made wands. The Lesser and Greater Magic Wands follow.

Does spell damage increase wand damage in WoW Forever? No. Blizzard’s beta notes say wands no longer gain damage from your spell damage.

Why does my wand not fire while I move? Wands need you to stand still for half a second before shooting, a change Blizzard made in the October 15 build to match early versions of the game.

Should I learn Enchanting for wands? It is a good fit for a cloth caster: you can craft your own early wands and disenchant spare gear for materials.
