NBA 2K27’s Update Toughens Shot Contests and Speeds Up Every Mode

2K pushed a gameplay update to NBA 2K27 on September 17, 2026, its first tuning pass since the v1.5 patch on September 11. The changes land in four areas, shooting, dunking, steals, and game speed, and according to 2K’s official patch updates page a broader set of fixes is still planned before Season 2 begins.

The Details

Shooting takes the biggest swing. 2K “strengthened defensive contests,” so well-contested and low-percentage attempts are now less effective, while wide-open looks got a slight boost “to reward smart shots.” That is a deliberate push toward shot selection over shot-making.

Dunking moved the other way. Standing dunks now succeed more often, 2K says, “most noticeably against average and below-average interior defenders,” and the Rise Up badge “now provides a more meaningful benefit at Gold tier and above.” Gold is the threshold that matters here, so badge investment below that still will not do much for you.

The steal change is a correction rather than a tuning choice. 2K addressed an issue where lower-rated defenders, and players with depleted adrenaline, “could get on-ball steals more consistently than elite defenders.” Steal rating is now properly rewarded on contact with the ball, which restores the gap between a defensive specialist and someone mashing the button.

Finally, a fix that touches everything: overall game speed “is now increased and/or standardized to be consistent across all modes of play.” If The City felt different from MyCAREER before today, that is why.

What This Means for Players

Two of these changes hit builds directly. If you leaned on a low steal rating and got away with it, that window just closed, and if you carried Rise Up at Bronze or Silver expecting value, it is now worth pushing to Gold. Our best builds guide covers where those points are best spent.

The contest change rewards spacing over contested pull-ups, which shifts which animations actually pay off. Our best animations guide breaks down the jumpers that survive a tighter contest model. Because the speed standardization affects every mode, teammate spacing and cuts read differently now, and our Synergy system explainer covers how those payoffs are calculated. When and Where

The update is live now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, PC, and Switch 2. 2K says the next patch, with a wider set of fixes, arrives before Season 2.
