Valheim Patch 1.0.14 Fixes Slow Diagonal Movement and Opens Up Keybinding

Iron Gate shipped Valheim Patch 1.0.14 on September 17, 2026, the studio’s third round of fixes since the Viking survival game left Early Access on September 9. The official patch notes describe an update that “touches upon a little bit of everything, from keybindings to music,” and it lands with one caveat worth knowing: the patch needs a few days to reach every platform, though Iron Gate confirms crossplay keeps working the whole time regardless of which version your friends are on.

The Details

The headline change is a genuine input fix. Iron Gate corrected “inaccuracies in stick input pre-processing that made it heavily weighted towards axis-aligned movement and 30% too slow diagonally,” which means controller players have been moving measurably slower on the diagonals this entire time without being told why.

Keybinding got the other half of the attention. The patch adds an alternate dodge key, hotbar rebinding beyond the original 1 through 8 slots, rebindable radial wheels, and the ability to remove keybinds outright. An accessibility setting to toggle blocking is now in, as is a Gameplay option to skip the intro cinematic on startup. On gamepad, Sheath returns to its original button, with the Motion Sensor moved to alt plus Sheath.

Performance work covers reduced GPU overhead when tessellation is off, more accurate heightmap shadows at a lower cost, less main menu overdraw, and “multiple GPU performance improvements on Switch 2.”

The bug list is long. Jotun puffs and Magecaps no longer respawn, the grappling hook’s secondary attack no longer errors on creatures, Ashlands water VFX and its lingering damage are fixed, and characters now save correctly when you press Save on someone else’s server. Two fixes deal with false cheat flags: players were sometimes marked as temporary cheaters, tainting the loot dropped by anything they killed, and cheated stackable items could corrupt clean stacks by merging with them.

What This Means for Players

If you play on a controller, re-test your combat feel before blaming your build. A 30 percent diagonal movement penalty affects kiting and dodge timing more than any gear swap, and our Deep North survival guide assumes you can actually reposition at full speed.

Modded players should hold off. Patches this broad routinely break loaders, so check our Valheim mods guide before updating. Groups playing across platforms are safe to keep going during the staggered rollout, and our crossplay guide covers joining when versions differ. When and Where

Patch 1.0.14 is live on Steam now and rolling out to PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Switch 2 over the next few days. Crossplay stays functional throughout.
