The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Beat Ambrus

Ambrus is a three-phase duel won with perfect blocks rather than aggression, and he will not even offer you the fight until you have made him angry enough. There is also an optional side quest in The Blood of Dawnwalker that poisons him before the duel and makes it substantially easier.

Who Ambrus Is

Ambrus is the Right Fist of the Knyaz and the youngest vrakhir in the valley, turned during Brencis’s takeover. He runs the blood supply chain across northern Vale Sangora: collection, storage, and transport.

That job is also your way in.

Making Him Angry Enough to Fight

The duel quest is called The Gilded Gauntlet, and it is not handed to you. You have to raise Ambrus’s Anger, tracked in the Court sub-menu, by wrecking his operations through Court Quests:

  • Leech Collectors
  • Blood Cellars
  • Blood Transports
  • Prisoner Transports

Once his anger is high enough, he sends a duel invitation. Players report picking it up by interacting with a letter near the Maragir Crossroads shrine, so check there if it does not find you.

Poison Him First

Before you accept, look for the side quest The Bittersweet Toast. A nobleman named Iulian proposes poisoning his own blood so that Ambrus feeds on it. If you let that happen, Ambrus enters the duel significantly weakened, and the fight collapses into little more than dodging his unblockable attacks.

This is optional, and skipping it is the main reason players find the duel brutal.

The Three Phases

Phase one. He opens with a multi-hit Sword Flurry, which you dodge backward, and a teleporting Upward Slash, which you side-step.

Phase two. He gains Scarlet Shield, a self-buff that absorbs damage and heals him from every attack it blocks. Attacking into it actively makes the fight worse. Use Dirty Trick to strip it. He also adds a Downward Slash, side-stepped like the first.

Phase three. He summons Blood Clones that attack one at a time before the real body returns. Do not chase the clones. Dodge through them and wait.

Throughout, this is not a fight you out-damage. Perfect block to open him up, then counter. If you have not invested in the defensive line of the Swordmastery tree, our best early skills guide covers the Omniblock into Perfect Riposte path that carries this duel.

The Choice Afterwards

You can kill Ambrus or drain his blood. Draining unlocks the Scarlet Shield skill for yourself, the same buff that made phase two irritating, and opens an extra dialogue scene including the option to invite him in. Draining also raises Corruption, which our corruption guide covers.

Either way he drops Ambrus’s Cuirass, a heavy chest piece built around vampiric cooldowns and Activation Charge restoration. Our best armor guide explains where it fits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I find the Ambrus fight?

You have not raised his Anger enough. Complete Court Quests that damage his blood operations and watch the Anger meter in the Court menu.

Should I drain Ambrus or kill him?

Draining gives you the Scarlet Shield skill and an extra scene, at the cost of Corruption. Killing avoids the Corruption.

How do I remove his shield in phase two?

Dirty Trick strips Scarlet Shield. Attacking into it heals him.

Is there a way to make the fight easier?

Yes. Complete The Bittersweet Toast first so Ambrus feeds on poisoned blood before the duel.
