The Aberrant is Dylan’s morphing melee weapon in Control Resonant, and it replaces Jesse’s Service Weapon. Rather than swapping between whole weapons, you configure a loadout with a primary form for basic attacks, a secondary form for special and charged attacks, and a combo ender for finishers.
The Loadout Structure
Each form carries its own upgrade tree, which unlocks alternate specialised forms and modifier effects. On PS5, two weapon styles are mapped to Square and Triangle, with forms transforming between them.
Forms can be swapped mid-combat, but the loadout itself is configured back in the Gap, covered in our Gap guide. One reviewer notes there is no second saved loadout slot for quick swapping between setups, which is worth knowing before you build around switching.
On how many forms exist, sources genuinely conflict. Official PlayStation material refers to a default of six total first and secondary Aberrant to choose from, producing “dozens of loadout combinations,” while other coverage describes three primary and secondary types alongside six combo finishers. We are not going to pick a number for you: the shape of the system is primary plus secondary plus combo ender, and the pool size is unsettled until launch.
The Shapes Confirmed So Far
Named across official material: an enormous hammer, short blades or paired swords, a scythe, a whip, a hatchet, a drill, and an orbiting levitating sawblade.
Two have described behaviour. Dual Blades are the speed and critical option, with a spinning-blade combo finisher that deals continuous damage in place. The Drill builds a purple gauge that, when filled, deals bonus damage and triggers a stumble, though that last detail comes from preview coverage rather than official documentation.
The Status Effect Combo
This is the most actionable thing on the page. The Aberrant applies status effects including burn and infect, and they combine: applying infect and then burn causes an explosion.
That turns form selection into a chemistry problem rather than a damage comparison. A primary that applies one effect paired with a secondary that applies the other is doing something neither does alone, which is also why the Talent tree is built around status-effect synergies, as our progression guide covers.
Mold Turrets, one of the summonable Combat Abilities, also apply harmful status effects, so the combo potential extends past the weapon itself into your ability loadout.
Upgrades
Weapon upgrades grant perks including improved cooldowns and increased combo-finisher damage. Because each form has its own tree and Talents force exclusive choices, you will not max everything in one run, which means picking a pair of forms early and committing is more effective than spreading points thin.
