Control Resonant has no traditional difficulty presets. There is no Easy, Normal or Hard menu. Instead, Remedy replaced the whole concept with an expanded Assist Mode, and the part that surprises people is that its sliders run in both directions: several options make the game harder, not easier.
Three Presets, All Customisable
Assist Mode ships with three starting points, Field Agent, Strategist and Ranger, and every one of them can be adjusted further.
Two things matter enormously here:
You can toggle Assist Mode on or off at any point during gameplay. You are not locked into a choice at the start, so experimenting costs nothing.
Assist Mode does not gate trophies or achievements. Nothing is withheld for using it, including at the extreme settings.
The Sliders
The adjustable options published by Remedy cover:
- Incoming Damage and Outgoing Damage
- Outgoing Falter, which controls how quickly you break enemy posture
- Power Recovery Speed
- Enemy Aggression, set to low, medium or high
- Perfect Dodge Window
- Enemy Projectile Speed
- Enhanced Melee Magnetizing
- Immortality, One-Hit Kills and One-Hit Falters
Read that list again with an eye for the harder direction. Raising Enemy Aggression, shrinking the Perfect Dodge Window, speeding up enemy projectiles and cutting your own Power Recovery all produce a game considerably more demanding than any preset would give you. This is a difficulty system disguised as an accessibility menu, and it is the most flexible one Remedy has shipped.
Why Remedy Did It This Way
Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov put the reasoning plainly: “if you run into a wall and the friction becomes too much, we’d much rather you adjust the rules and keep playing than put the controller down and stop.”
That is worth taking at face value. Resonant’s combat is melee-first and asks you to manage threats from every direction, as our combat guide covers, so the wall it refers to is a real one.
The Wider Accessibility Set
Beyond the difficulty sliders, Resonant includes subtitle size, background and speaker names, separate adjustable colourblind palettes for the interface and the world, and toggles to disable motion blur, depth of field, lens distortion, film grain and vignetting.
There is also shift tunneling with an adjustable vignette, per-category volume control, and a Hyperacusis Filter that reduces piercing sounds, which is an unusually specific inclusion. Every input is remappable across mouse, keyboard and controller, hold actions can be converted to toggles, and axes can be inverted.
