Control Resonant: What the Gap Is and How to Open It

CONTROL Resonant

The Gap is Control Resonant‘s upgrade hub, and it is a place rather than a menu. Remedy describes it as a diegetic mind palace, a liminal space inside Dylan’s psyche, and it is where you configure every part of your build. You open it with down on the directional pad, outside combat, at any time.

One Small Caveat on the Input

Remedy’s own materials describe this slightly differently in two places. Earlier material says press down on the d-pad; the more recent feature says hold down on the directional buttons.

Both are official, and the later one probably reflects a refinement during development. If a press does not do it, hold it.

What You Do In There

The Gap is where all three progression systems live, which is why it matters more than a typical hub:

Configure and test your Aberrant loadout. Your primary form, secondary form and combo ender are all set here, and you can test them before heading back out. Our Aberrant weapon guide covers how those slots interact.

Spend upgrades across the three trees, meaning paranatural abilities, the per-form weapon upgrade trees, and the broader Talent tree of passive modifiers. Our progression guide covers how those differ.

Choose your new power after defeating a Resonant. Beating one of the game’s major bosses sends you here to pick from a small set of abilities tied to that fight, which makes the Gap the place where your build actually gets decided.

Why Remedy Built It This Way

This is the same design lineage as Alan Wake 2’s Mind Place. Rather than pausing into an abstract menu, you step into a space that belongs to the character and the fiction, and the upgrade screen becomes somewhere you have been rather than something you opened.

For Resonant specifically it does useful work, because Dylan’s kit is unusually configurable. Being able to test a loadout in the Gap before committing to it in a fight is the practical benefit, given that our combat guide covers a fight economy where the wrong pairing starves you of Power.

One limitation reported by reviewers: there is no second saved loadout slot, so switching setups means reconfiguring rather than toggling between presets. Expect to visit the Gap more often than you would a game with saved builds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Gap?

A diegetic hub inside Dylan’s mind where you manage loadouts, spend upgrades and choose new abilities.

Can I access it any time?

Yes, at any point outside combat.

Can I save multiple loadouts?

Reviewers report there is no second saved loadout slot, so changing setups means reconfiguring in the Gap.
