GTA Vice City: How to Progress the Story

Official art for Grand Theft Auto Vice City The Definitive Edition

If you have reached a point in GTA Vice City where no mission markers appear anywhere on the map, the game is not bugged. You have finished the mandatory story missions, and the final two are gated behind asset properties. Until you buy and complete enough of them, there is nothing else for the story to give you.

What the Game Is Actually Waiting For

The requirement is seven profitable places, marked with a dollar icon on your map. The Vercetti Estate counts as one of those automatically, so in practice you need to buy and complete the missions for six more.

Two details decide whether your six actually count:

  • Print Works is mandatory. One of your six has to be it.
  • Phil’s Place does not count. It is a property you can buy, but it does not contribute to the total.

Players who buy six assets without Print Works, or who count Phil’s Place toward the number, end up at six qualifying properties and no unlock, which is exactly the confusing state this gate produces.

Buying and Completing Assets

Buying a property is only the first half. Each asset comes with its own short mission chain, and the property does not become profitable, or count toward your seven, until that chain is finished.

So the sequence for each one is: buy it, run its missions, confirm the dollar icon appears. Then move to the next.

Assets cost money, and the amounts are substantial. Our guide on how to make money fast in Vice City covers the quickest ways to fund the run, and the pizza delivery side job is one of the more reliable early earners if you are starting from very little.

What Unlocks at Seven

Once you have seven profitable places, Cap the Collector becomes available. Finishing it leads immediately into Keep Your Friends Close, the mansion assault that ends the main story and leaves Tommy running the city.

That is the entire back half of the game sitting behind the property system, which is why treating assets as optional side content is the single most common way to stall a Vice City playthrough.

A Practical Order

If you are starting the asset run from scratch, buy Print Works early so the mandatory one is out of the way, then fill in the remaining five with whichever properties are closest to your current base of operations. Travel time across Vice City adds up, and clustering your purchases geographically saves a real amount of it.

While you are moving between them, our guide on changing clothes covers the wanted-level trick that makes crossing the map between asset missions considerably less eventful.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many properties do you need in total? Seven profitable places, including the Vercetti Estate, which means six purchases.

Which property is mandatory? Print Works. The finale will not unlock without it.

Does Phil’s Place count toward the total? No. It is the notable exception.

Do you have to finish each asset’s missions? Yes. Owning the property is not enough on its own.
