GTA 4 has no property empire and no stock market, which surprises people arriving from the later games. The most reliable repeatable earner is Stevie’s Car Thefts, and there is a timing trick that turns it from a slow drip into something you can actually grind.
Stevie’s Car Thefts
Stevie runs S&M Auto Sales in Chase Point, Bohan, and he texts Niko asking for specific vehicles.
To unlock him, complete Brucie’s race mission No. 1 and Derrick McReary’s Smackdown. After that Brucie puts you in touch and the texts start arriving.
There are 30 different vehicles in total, scattered across Liberty City and Alderney. Each one pays on delivery to his garage.
The Trick That Makes It Fast
The problem with Stevie is the waiting. After each delivery, his next text can take hours of in-game time.
The fix is to advance the clock deliberately:
- Save repeatedly at the nearby Bohan safehouse, or
- Use a Pay ‘n’ Spray over and over.
Both push time forward, which turns an hours-long wait into a couple of minutes. Without this, the 30 cars are a genuinely tedious project.
The Payoff for Finishing All 30
Once all 30 are delivered, the strand converts into something better: you can bring Stevie any vehicle you like for cash. That makes it an open-ended earner rather than a finite list, and it is the reason to push through the full set rather than cherry-picking.
Vigilante Work
The police computer in any patrol car runs the vigilante missions under View Current Crimes, unlocked after Roman’s mission Crime and Punishment.
Be clear about what this pays, though: there is no guaranteed cash reward. Your income is whatever the criminals drop. Gang targets tend to leave weapons rather than money, while a lone fleeing criminal usually drops cash. It is worth doing for the weapons more than the wallet.
Stealing a patrol car to access the computer means dealing with the consequences, and our guide on how to heal covers recovering afterwards.
What Money Is Actually For
This matters, because GTA 4 gives you less to spend on than its sequels. There is no property, no business, no car customisation empire. Money goes on weapons, ammo, armour, clothes, taxis and the odd meal.
That means there is a point where you have enough, and grinding past it achieves nothing. Our guide on how to save cars covers keeping vehicles without paying for them, which is most of what a car budget would otherwise cover.
