There are 24 masks in Majora’s Mask, and the structure matters more than the list. Twenty of them are ordinary masks. Four are transformations. Collecting all 20 non-transformation masks and offering them to the Moon Children inside the Moon is what unlocks the Fierce Deity Mask, which is the reason to do any of this.
The Transformation Masks
These are story items rather than collectibles, and you cannot miss them:
- Deku Mask, from the Happy Mask Salesman after the opening.
- Goron Mask, from playing the Song of Healing for Darmani’s spirit in the Goron Graveyard.
- Zora Mask, from healing Mikau.
- Giant’s Mask, found inside Stone Tower Temple and used against Twinmold.
The first three change how Link moves entirely, and the Zora Mask in particular turns water from an obstacle into a route.
The Twenty You Actually Collect
These are the ones that gate the Fierce Deity Mask, and they come from side quests rather than dungeons. A few examples of how varied they are:
- Bunny Hood, from Grog at the Cucco Shack. Our guide on how to get the Bunny Hood covers it.
- Blast Mask, from saving the old lady from Sakon at midnight on the first night. Our guide on how to get bombs covers that window.
- Mask of Truth, from clearing the Swamp Spider House of its gold skulltulas.
- Couple’s Mask, the reward for the Anju and Kafei quest, which is the longest and most involved side quest in the game.
- Garo’s Mask and Gibdo Mask, both of which are keys rather than curiosities: they get you into parts of Ikana that are otherwise closed.
The Two Hard Ones
The Couple’s Mask requires the full Anju and Kafei chain, which spans all three days and has to be executed in order with correct timing at several points. It is the single most demanding thing in the game and it cannot be rushed.
The All-Night Mask becomes available at the Curiosity Shop on the final night, and it is expensive. Having money ready before the third day is the practical answer.
Time Is the Real Obstacle
Almost every mask is tied to an event at a specific hour, and the three-day clock is what makes collecting them hard rather than the puzzles themselves.
This is why the time songs matter so much here. Our guide on how to slow down and speed up time covers both, and the Inverted Song of Time in particular turns mask collecting from a scramble into something manageable.
Masks persist across cycles once obtained, so nothing is ever lost. Our guide on how saving works covers what does and does not carry over.
The Fierce Deity Mask
Take all 20 ordinary masks to the Moon and give them to the Moon Children, completing their trials, and the last child hands over the Fierce Deity Mask. It transforms Link into a towering swordsman and it is absurdly powerful.
It only works in boss rooms, which is the catch, and it is the game’s reward for completion rather than a tool for getting there.
