To become a fairy in The Sims 3, you need the Supernatural expansion pack; then either pick Fairy as the Supernatural Type in Create a Sim, or turn an existing Sim with the Bottled Blessing of the Fae elixir. A third route, searching for fairies at the Arboretum, can also work but relies on luck. This guide covers all three, plus the mod option, what fairies can do and how to undo it if you change your mind.
Before You Start: Supernatural Is Required
Fairies were added to The Sims 3 by Supernatural, the same expansion that brought witches, werewolves, zombies, alchemy and the world of Moonlight Falls. Without it, there is no fairy life state, no elixir and no Arboretum. Everything below assumes it is installed, on PC or Mac.
Method 1: Create a Fairy in Create a Sim
This is the fastest route for a new Sim.
- Open Create a Sim, either when starting a new household or through Edit Town.
- In the Basics section, click the Supernatural Types button and choose Fairy.
- A second tab, Fairy Basics, appears. Pick one of the six wing designs (including Willowed Wisps, Dreamy Dragonfly and Majestic Monarch) and use Change Wing Color to set the colors.
Your Sim starts life as a fairy, wings and all. Per community documentation, custom wing colors made on the color wheel are not saved as presets, so note the values if you want to match them later.
Method 2: The Bottled Blessing of the Fae Elixir
To turn a Sim who already exists, use the Bottled Blessing of the Fae. There are two ways to get one.
Brew it. Community documentation lists this as a level 10 Alchemy elixir made from red toadstools, a sunstone and a Fairy Damsel fish. Buy an Aleister’s Alchemy Station from Buy Mode, research alchemy until your Sim hits level 10, then gather the ingredients. The Fairy Damsel is a rare saltwater fish, so a Sim with good fishing skill makes this much easier. Our skill cheat guide can shortcut the Alchemy grind.
Buy it. The Elixir Consignment Store sometimes stocks it, but not every day. Check back regularly if you do not want to brew.
Once you have the bottle, your Sim can drink it or throw it at another Sim. The target transforms into a fairy on the spot. Community documentation notes it replaces any occult life state the Sim already had and does not work on pureblood aliens.
Method 3: Search for Fairies at the Arboretum
The Arboretum is a rabbit hole added by Supernatural; the only pre-placed one is in Moonlight Falls. Click it and choose Search for Fairies. While inside, you get a series of chance cards, and per community documentation the choices you make there do not change the outcome.
After the visit, there is a small chance (community documentation puts it at 4 percent) that your Sim receives an opportunity called Becoming a Fairy. Complete it and they transform. Most searches instead hand out fairy dust or a relationship boost with a fairy, so expect to repeat this many times.
Method 4: Mods

What Fairies Can Do
Fairies keep normal needs but gain a magic meter and a hidden Fairy Magic skill that unlocks more tricks as it grows. Highlights, per community documentation:
- Flight: they fly instead of walk, and at low levels can grant another Sim temporary flight with Flight of Felicity.
- Fairy Repair and Bloom: repair objects without electrocution, and push plants to their next growth stage, which makes fairies natural gardeners. See our gardening guide.
- Traps and pranks: rig showers, toilets, sofas and mailboxes with fairy traps that trigger on the next Sim to use them.
- Auras: project an aura that benefits nearby Sims and builds the fairy’s skill quickly.
- Long life: young adult and adult fairies are described as living about five times as long as ordinary Sims.
Fairies get an “Energized by Moonlight” boost on most nights and a small negative moodlet on the new moon. The magic meter refills over time, or faster in a Fairy House.
