You get Spirit in Path of Exile 2 from two places: permanent rewards for killing three specific campaign bosses, and gear, above all sceptres plus body armour and amulets that roll Spirit modifiers. Player campaign guides put the permanent campaign total at 100 Spirit, split across bosses in Act 1, Act 3 and the Interludes, and at least one of those bosses is optional and easy to walk past.
Below we cover what Spirit does, each campaign source and where to find it, the gear and passives that add more, and the mistakes that leave builds short. This guide covers the Early Access build as of September 2026 (version 0.5.5, the Forbidden Rites event and Runes of Aldur league), with mechanics verified against official patch notes where Grinding Gear Games has documented them. The system works the same on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
What Spirit does
Spirit is the resource that pays for your always-on effects. Persistent buffs, auras and permanent minions do not spend it the way a skill spends mana; they reserve a fixed amount for as long as they are active. If your reserved total would go over your maximum Spirit, you cannot turn the next effect on.
That is why Spirit is a hard cap on a build rather than something you refill. A minion build that wants several skeleton types, or a caster that wants a defensive buff plus an aura, needs a bigger Spirit pool, not better regeneration.
One naming trap: the 0.5.5 patch notes talk a lot about “Azmeri Spirits,” which are league monsters that possess enemies. They have nothing to do with your character’s Spirit stat.
The three campaign bosses that grant Spirit
Spirit from the campaign is not handed out automatically at the end of an act. Each boss drops a consumable item that you must pick up and use for the Spirit to count. Community campaign guides list three sources in the current build:
| Boss | Where | Spirit |
|---|---|---|
| The King in the Mists | Freythorn, Act 1 | +30 |
| Ignagduk, the Bog Witch | The Azak Bog, Act 3 | +30 |
| Lythara, the Wayward Spear | Kriar Village, Interlude 3 | +40 |
The King in the Mists is the one players miss. Player guides describe him as an optional boss in Freythorn, reached through a side quest involving ritual altars rather than the main story path. He also drops a Spirit gem, which is the first way most builds get a persistent skill.
Ignagduk in Act 3 and Lythara in the third Interlude sit closer to the critical path, but each drop still has to be picked up and used. If your Spirit looks lower than a build guide expects, check your inventory for an unused boss drop before assuming the guide is wrong.
Because Cruel difficulty was removed in the 0.3.0 update, there is no second round of campaign Spirit rewards to collect. If you want to know where these bosses fall in the wider story, our guide to how long Path of Exile 2 is and how many acts there are lays out the full campaign.
Gear that adds Spirit
Past the campaign, your Spirit comes from items:
- Sceptres. The sceptre is the one weapon type built around Spirit, carrying it as part of the base item. Player guides note it can be improved further with increased Spirit modifiers. Minion and aura builds often hold a sceptre in the off-hand for this reason alone.
- Body armour and amulets. Both can roll a flat “+ to Spirit” modifier. On most builds these are the two slots to watch when shopping for upgrades.
- Unique items. Some uniques grant Spirit directly. Player guides name examples such as the helmet Alpha’s Howl, but unique stats change between patches, so read the tooltip in game before buying.
A practical tip for trading: the 0.5.0 patch notes added the ability “to quickly search the trade market with an item you have,” which makes comparing Spirit rolls on an item you already own much faster.
Passives and reservation discounts
The passive tree offers two kinds of help. Some notables increase maximum Spirit outright; player guides point to minion-focused clusters for this. Others reduce how much Spirit specific effects reserve, which is often worth more than raw Spirit because it applies to every copy of a minion or buff.
Skill gem level matters too. Player guides report that levelling some minion gems lowers their per-minion reservation, so upgrading a gem can free up Spirit for another effect without touching your gear.
If your passive choices go wrong, they are not permanent: Path of Exile 2 lets you refund passive points for gold, so a Spirit-focused path can be moved later.
Common Spirit mistakes
- Skipping the King in the Mists. It is optional, and it is the most commonly missed source.
- Not using the boss drop. The Spirit only counts after you pick up and use the item.
- Forgetting where the Spirit comes from. Player guides warn that if much of your Spirit sits on a sceptre, changing weapons can leave your maximum below what your effects reserve.
- Chasing a build guide from an older patch. Spirit costs and sources have moved across Early Access. Check which version a build guide was written for.
Spirit-heavy summoner builds are also a good fit for group play, where a steady wall of minions protects squishier friends. Frequently Asked Questions
How much Spirit do you get from the campaign in Path of Exile 2? Community campaign guides put it at 100 in the current build: 30 from the King in the Mists, 30 from Ignagduk and 40 from Lythara.
Where is the King in the Mists? In Freythorn in Act 1. Player guides describe him as optional and reached through a side quest involving ritual altars, so he is easy to miss.
Why did I not get Spirit after killing the boss? Each Spirit boss drops an item that has to be picked up and used. Check your inventory for it.
Which weapon gives Spirit? Sceptres. They carry Spirit on the base item, which is why minion and aura builds often use one in the off-hand.
Do I get more Spirit on Cruel difficulty? No. Cruel was removed in the 0.3.0 update, so each campaign Spirit reward is collected once.
