The fastest way to increase Courage in Persona 4 Golden is the hospital janitor job, backed up by the Courage books, riding your scooter, and eating the questionable food that turns up in the Dojima fridge. None of these is fast on its own, so the trick is stacking them on the days when nothing else is available. Below we cover every Courage source, what each rank unlocks, how many points each rank takes, and where the original PS2 release differs.
Which Version This Covers
This guide is written for Persona 4 Golden, the enhanced version Atlus sells today on PC (Steam), PlayStation 4 (which also runs on PS5 through backward compatibility), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. The social stat system is the same one the original Persona 4 used on PS2 in 2008, but Golden adds several new ways to earn points: the scooter, evening outings and the Shiroku Pub. We flag those below as Golden-only.
Courage is one of five social stats, alongside Knowledge, Expression, Understanding and Diligence. Per the community wiki, the five Courage ranks are:
| Rank | Name | Points needed (per the community wiki) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Average | Starting rank |
| 2 | Reliable | 16 |
| 3 | Brave | 40 |
| 4 | Daring | 80 |
| 5 (max) | Heroic | 140 |
The Best Ways to Raise Courage
Work the Hospital Janitor Job
The hospital job at Inaba Municipal Hospital is the steadiest Courage source in the game. It runs on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, you reach it from the bus stop in the shopping district, and it pays yen on top of the stat gain. The catch is that it requires Diligence at Rank 3 (Strong) before you can apply. It also starts the Devil Social Link, so every shift pulls double duty. The community wiki adds that reading the book 100 Ghost Stories gives bonus points on hospital shifts.
Read the Courage Books
Reading on the sofa at home costs time, but each finished book is a guaranteed gain. The community wiki lists these as the Courage books in Golden:
- The Lovely Man
- Forever Macho
- Man of History
- Man-God
- Farewell to Man
Books are a good use of evenings when you cannot leave the house or when the Social Links you want are unavailable.
Ride the Scooter (Golden Only)
Golden added a motorcycle license storyline in June, after which Dojima gives you a scooter parked outside the house. Per the community wiki, taking it for a ride raises Courage, and longer rides gradually unlock new areas such as Okina City and Shichiri Beach.
Eat the Food in the Fridge
On certain days, suspicious leftovers appear in the Dojima refrigerator. Choosing to taste them raises Courage by a small amount. It is free, so check the fridge whenever the game hints that something is inside.
Eat at Aiya and Try the Mega Beef Bowl
Chinese Diner Aiya in the Central Shopping District rotates its menu by day. Per the community wiki’s menu table for Golden, the Mabo Tofu Combo served on Mondays and Tuesdays is the Courage dish. On rainy afternoons Aiya also offers the Mega Beef Bowl challenge, which the wiki says raises three random stats (never Expression) but only succeeds if your social stats are already high enough.
Revisit Old Dungeons for Optional Bosses
The community wiki notes that going back into a cleared dungeon to defeat its optional boss raises Courage. These fights are tied to requests you pick up around Inaba, so you are often doing them anyway.
Pick Brave Dialogue Options
Some story and Social Link dialogue choices raise Courage directly. The wiki’s example is early in the school year: on April 12, answering your homeroom teacher with “…You calling me a loser?” grants a Courage gain.
Take Dishwasher Shifts at Shiroku Pub (Golden Only)
At night the Shiroku Store becomes the Shiroku Pub, where you can wash dishes. The job mainly raises Diligence, but depending on the customer you talk to, it can also raise Courage, Understanding, Expression or Knowledge.
What Courage Unlocks
Courage matters because several parts of the game are gated behind it:
- Night visits to Tatsuhime Shrine (Golden): Reliable (Rank 2) Courage lets you enter the shrine at night, which is part of how you get the Butterfly Net and, through it, the bugs used as fishing bait.
- Ai Ebihara’s Moon Social Link: needs Brave (Rank 3) Courage to begin.
- Naoto Shirogane’s Social Link: per the community wiki, it is gated behind top-rank Heroic Courage together with a high Knowledge rank, which is why many players find it starts late.
- Dialogue options: some Social Link answers, including a couple in Kanji’s Emperor link, only appear once you reach Brave.
A Simple Weekly Routine
If you want Courage handled without overthinking it, this is the pattern player guides describe:
- Push Diligence to Strong early (envelope folding at your desk is the easy way), so the hospital job opens.
- Work the hospital shift on one or more of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings.
- Use rainy days and dead evenings for Courage books.
- In Golden, ride the scooter on free afternoons once you have it.
- Always taste the fridge food when it appears.
How the Original PS2 Persona 4 Differs
The core Courage sources, the hospital job, the fridge food and brave dialogue choices, work the same way in the 2008 PS2 release. What the original lacks is everything Golden added: there is no scooter, no Shiroku Pub, and no evening trips out of the house when Dojima is home, so Courage in the original leans more heavily on the hospital job. Book lists and Aiya’s menu also differ between versions, so check the in-game descriptions if you are playing the PS2 disc.
Persona 4 is also getting a full remake. Our news post on Persona 4 Revival’s release date covers what is confirmed so far, but this guide applies to Golden and the original only. If you are here for the PS2 era, the original also sits on our list of the best PS2 games of all time, and its successor Persona 5 ranks among our best PS3 games.
