You unlock Synergy in NBA 2K27 by earning it on four progression tracks: the Season rewards ladder, Build Specialization, Crew levels and REP. 2K says there are 16 Synergy slots in total (12 give a +1 boost, 4 give +2), and none of them are available on a brand-new build; each one arrives as a reward you earn by playing.
Updated October 14, 2026: Season 2 starts October 16 with a new rewards ladder, and 2K’s Season 2 Courtside Report puts its four Synergy Badge Slots at Levels 7, 15, 25 and 35. We added the Season 2 ladder below and kept the Season 1 levels, labelled, for reference. Our Season 2 story covers the rest of the new season.
Below we go through each source in the order most players will reach it, which rewards you keep for good and which expire, and exactly what to do once a Synergy slot unlocks. For what Fuse and Reaction badges are and how to plan around them, see our Synergy system explainer.
How Synergy Slots Work Once You Have Them
A quick refresher, straight from 2K’s MyPLAYER Builder notes for NBA 2K27:
- Fuse: the badge you place in a Fuse slot gets a permanent +1 or +2 tier boost for the entire game, and placing it there “entirely frees up the Badge Tokens you would have otherwise spent to equip it.”
- Reaction: a Reaction badge is paired with a Fuse badge. Once you have activated the Fuse badge “a set number of times during a game,” the Reaction badge gets the same +1 or +2 for the rest of that game.
Community breakdowns of the in-game screen describe each Synergy reward as a pair, one Fuse slot above one Reaction slot, which is how 16 slots become eight pairs: six +1 pairs and two +2 pairs. Boosts can push a badge past its normal cap, up to Legend.
Every Way to Unlock Synergy
| Source | What you get | Kept for good |
|---|---|---|
| Season rewards ladder | Four Synergy Badge Slots on the way to Level 40 (Levels 7, 15, 25 and 35 from Season 2) | No, expires when the Season ends |
| Build Specialization | A +2 Synergy reward at Level 10 of your track | Yes, account-wide |
| Crew progression | Two +1 Synergy rewards | Yes, account-wide |
| REP | Synergy at the Legend tier | Yes, account-wide |
2K’s own wording on the split: Season Synergy “expires at the end of each Season,” while Synergy “earned through Build Specialization, Crew, and REP are permanent across all save files on your account.”
Step by Step: Unlocking Each Source
- Level the Season ladder. Season XP comes from games in The City and MyTEAM, with cross-progression between them. These are the fastest Synergy to reach, but they expire when each Season ends. Our VC guide covers what else the Season track pays out.
- From Season 2 (October 16): 2K’s Season 2 Courtside Report lists four Synergy Badge Slots at Levels 7, 15, 25 and 35, on a ladder that also pays two Bonus Badge Slots (Levels 11 and 31), two Bonus Badge Tokens (Levels 16 and 36) and a +1 Cap Breaker at Level 40.
- Season 1 (until October 16): 2K confirmed four Synergy Badge Slots on the path to Level 40, including one at Level 30; community reward lists put the others at Levels 10, 20 and 37. Season 1’s Synergy expires when Season 2 starts.
- Pick a Build Specialization track and finish it. 2K brought back Build Specialization with six tracks (Shooting, Finishing, Playmaking, Defense, Rebounding and, new this year, Physicals), each with 10 quests. Reaching Level 10 awards a permanent +2 Synergy reward. The catch: Build Specialization slots are locked to badges in that track’s discipline, so a Shooting track Fuse has to hold a shooting badge.
- Join a Crew and stay in it. Community reward lists for the Crew ladder put a +1 Synergy reward at Crew Levels 28 and 39, and both require you to have been a Crew member for seven days before you can claim them, so join a Crew early rather than waiting until you are close.
- Grind REP to Legend. Community REP ladders place permanent Synergy at Legend II, and players tracking the numbers identify it as the second +2 pair. This is the long-haul reward, so treat it as a bonus rather than a plan.
What to Do When a Synergy Slot Unlocks
- Open your MyPLAYER’s badge screen, the same place you spend Badge Tokens, and find the Synergy pairs you have unlocked. Each pair has a Fuse slot and a Reaction slot.
- Fill the Fuse slot first. Put in the badge you rely on every possession. It costs no Badge Tokens there, so you get those tokens back to spend elsewhere (our Badge Tokens guide covers how they are earned).
- Pick a Reaction badge you will actually trigger. It only boosts after the Fuse badge activates enough times in a game. 2K has not published the exact counts, so pair it with a Fuse badge you trigger constantly.
- Use the +2 pairs on your most important badge. A +2 turns a Gold badge into Legend. For example, the September 17 gameplay update made Rise Up meaningfully stronger at Gold and above, so a Silver Rise Up in a +1 Fuse slot crosses that line without spending tokens.
- Re-check after each Season. When Season Synergy expires, anything slotted there loses its boost, so move your key badges into permanent pairs as you earn them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Synergy slots are there in NBA 2K27? 16 in total, per 2K: 12 give a +1 boost and 4 give +2. Community breakdowns show them as eight Fuse and Reaction pairs.
Do Synergy slots carry over to new builds? The ones from Build Specialization, Crew and REP do. 2K says they are permanent across all save files on your account. Season Synergy does not last past the Season.
Why can’t I put any badge in my Build Specialization Synergy slot? Those slots are locked to badges in that specialization’s discipline. The other Synergy slots work across disciplines.
Why is my Crew Synergy reward locked? Per community reward lists, both Crew Synergy rewards need seven days of Crew membership before you can claim them.
Does a Fuse badge cost Badge Tokens? No. 2K says placing a badge in a Fuse slot frees up the tokens you would have spent to equip it.
What is the fastest way to unlock Synergy? The Season ladder, since its four slots come from normal play in The City and MyTEAM; from Season 2 (October 16), the first one arrives at Level 7. For permanent slots, finishing a Build Specialization track is usually the quickest.
