To join the Film career in The Sims 3, install the Late Night expansion pack, then have a young adult or older Sim click the Plumbob Pictures Backlot film studio and choose to join, or pick the Film job from the newspaper or a computer. In Bridgeport the studio is already there; in every other town you have to place one yourself first. Below we cover the requirements, adding a studio, how the career levels and branches work, and how celebrity status drives promotions.
What You Need
- The Late Night expansion pack. The Film career, the film studio and the celebrity system all come from it. Late Night is still sold on the EA app (Windows and Mac) and as DLC on the Steam store page. The game no longer receives patches, so what is below describes the final build.
- A young adult, adult or elder Sim. Like the other full-time careers, Film is not open to teens.
- A film studio in town. The workplace is a rabbit hole called the Plumbob Pictures Backlot.
Adding a Film Studio Outside Bridgeport
Bridgeport, the world that ships with Late Night, has the Plumbob Pictures Backlot built in. Per the community-run Sims wiki, other worlds (Sunset Valley, Twinbrook and the rest) do not get one automatically, so the Film career will not appear until you add it.
- Go to Edit Town and pick a community lot you are happy to rebuild, or place an empty community lot.
- Enter the lot’s Build/Buy mode and find the film studio rabbit hole in Buy Mode’s community objects.
- Place it, make sure it fits (it is a large 31 by 35 square rabbit hole), and save.
Once the studio exists, the career shows up in job listings like any other.
How to Apply for the Film Career
There are three ways in, and all lead to the same career:
- At the studio: send the Sim to the Plumbob Pictures Backlot and click the building. The menu offers a tour and the option to join the Film career.
- Newspaper: read the newspaper’s job listings and pick the Film job.
- Computer: use the computer’s job search and pick the Film job.
With University Life installed, Sims can also upload a resume from a computer, which that pack added for careers in general.
A new hire normally starts at level 1, Background Extra.
Career Levels and the Actor or Director Choice
The Film career has ten levels. Levels 1 to 5 are shared: Background Extra, Best Boy (or Best Girl), Key Grip, Personal Assistant and Production Manager. When your Sim is promoted from Production Manager, the game asks you to choose a branch.
Actor branch (Charisma): TV Actor, Featured Actor, Supporting Actor, Lead Actor and Superstar Actor.
Director branch (Writing): Storyboardist, 2nd Unit Director, Script Writer, Assistant Director and Distinguished Director.
Per the community wiki’s career tables, the top Actor level pays more per hour, while the Director levels keep steadier weekday schedules. Both branches hand out trophies on the way up: a Sim’s Choice Award at level 7, a Green Orb Award at level 9 and a Simmy Award at level 10. The top levels also add perks such as a limousine carpool, a Superstar Trailer for actors and a Director’s Seat of Power for directors.

What Drives Promotions
The career panel lists the performance factors for each level. Per the community wiki:
- Mood matters at every level, as in any career.
- Cast Members (relationships with coworkers) count from level 2. Use the Meet Cast Members and Hang with Cast Members work tones to build them without extra effort.
- Celebrity level becomes a factor from level 4, Personal Assistant. From that level the career also gives celebrity points, so working the job itself helps.
- Charisma for actors or Writing for directors becomes the main skill factor from level 6.

One warning: patch 1.38 added population controls that can switch off celebrities. The community wiki notes that doing so can block the celebrity performance factor, which stalls this career.
