No, you cannot appear offline in Fortnite: Epic’s help center says the game only lets you set your status to Online or Away, with no invisible or offline option. The closest you can get is the Away status plus an Invite Only party, and on PlayStation, Xbox and Switch a console-level offline setting, which hides you from console friends but not from your Epic friends list.
Below we cover what Epic says, how to set each option, what the console settings really hide, and how to stop the invites and friend requests that usually prompt the search.
Which Version This Covers
This guide reflects Fortnite as of Chapter 7 Season 4, Fortnite Override, on the v42.20 update. Status and privacy settings are account features rather than seasonal content, so they have not changed with Override. The in-game options below exist on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and mobile, though menu layouts differ slightly on mobile; the console offline settings differ by platform and are covered separately.
What Epic Says About Appearing Offline
Epic answers this directly in its help center: Fortnite does not allow players to appear offline, and the only statuses are Online and Away. The Epic Games Launcher is the same: Epic says the Launcher has no option to set yourself as offline, only Away.
Away is not a disguise. Epic describes Away in the Launcher as the status of someone who has not been active for a few minutes, and friends still see that you are in Fortnite. What Away does is signal that you are not available, and paired with the settings below, it stops most people from dropping into your game.
How to Set Your Status to Away
In Fortnite, per Epic’s help center:
- From the lobby, select your profile icon.
- Select your profile icon again to open your status options.
- Choose Away (or Online to switch back).
In the Epic Games Launcher on PC, select your avatar in the top right corner, select Online under your name, and choose Away from the drop-down menu.
Lock Your Party With Invite Only
The status is cosmetic; party joinability is what actually keeps friends out. Per Epic’s parties FAQ, there are two settings:
- Joinable: friends and connections can drop into your party without asking.
- Invite Only: players must be invited, or have their join request approved.
Change it with the joinability toggle in your party controls on the Social tab. Epic says the choice is saved as your account preference across Fortnite, the Epic Games Launcher and the Epic Games Store. Two caveats: anyone in your party can change the setting, and if you join a friend’s open party, you follow their setting until you leave. Epic also notes that accounts for players who say they are under 18 start on Invite Only.
Stop Friend Requests and Hide Your Name
If random invites and friend requests are the real problem, two more settings help. Both live in Fortnite’s Settings under the Account and Privacy tab, the same menu that holds the Can Receive Gifts toggle from our guide on how to gift skins and the Battle Pass.
- Friend requests: under Social Privacy, set Friend Invite permission to No One, then select Apply. Epic’s help center says this turns incoming requests off.
- Anonymous mode: under Gameplay Privacy, turn on Hide Your Display Name During Regular Gameplay. Players outside your party then see “Anonymous” instead of your name. Epic says this cannot be used in competitive modes, and your account details still go with any player report.
Anonymous mode does not hide you from friends. It hides your name from the strangers in your match, which is the fix if people keep finding you after a game.
Appear Offline on Your Console Instead
Consoles have their own status systems, and each one can hide you:
- PS5: from the home screen, select your profile, select Online Status, and choose Appear Offline. Sony’s own online status help page warns that other players can still invite you to voice chat and games, and that within a game you might appear online to other players.
- Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One: press the Xbox button, open the Profile and system tab, select your profile, and switch your status to Appear offline.
- Switch 2: per Nintendo’s support page, open your user page from the HOME Menu, select User Settings, then Online-Status Display under Friend Functions, and choose who can see you: all friends, best friends, or no one. Switch 1 has a matching Display Online Status option under Friend Settings.
The catch: these settings only cover your console friends list. Fortnite’s friends list runs on your Epic account, so Epic friends can still see you in Fortnite unless you also set Away and Invite Only. A console setting on its own is half the job.
