No: the physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI doesn’t contain a disc. The Rockstar Store says “Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12. A disc will not be included in the box.”
So every copy of GTA 6, boxed or digital, is a download. Here is what that means for you.
What’s in the Box
- A download code, not a disc. You redeem it on your PlayStation or Xbox account and download the game.
- Only the Standard Edition comes boxed. The Ultimate Edition is digital only, as our editions guide explains.
- An internet connection and a platform account are needed to download it, per the store FAQ.
Rockstar says boxed copies are available from November 12, a week before launch, so boxed buyers can redeem the code and preload. Our preload guide covers that step.
The Region Lock on PlayStation Codes
This is the detail most likely to catch someone out. The Rockstar Store FAQ says boxed PlayStation codes only work on accounts from the region they were sold for:
- North America: “Purchases shipped to the United States and Canada will only work for customers holding an account for PlayStation registered to these countries.”
- United Kingdom: “Purchases shipped to the United Kingdom will only work for customers holding an account for PlayStation in this country.”
- The rest of Europe: codes sold to other Rockstar Store destinations only work with PlayStation accounts in the European countries the store lists.
So an imported box, or a gift bought in another country, may not work on your account. The FAQ only spells out this rule for PlayStation; it says nothing either way about Xbox codes, so check the retailer before buying an Xbox box from abroad.
Buying the Box From the Rockstar Store
- Where it ships: the US, Canada, the UK and a list of European countries.
- When it ships: from November 12, 2026. Orders placed after launch ship in an estimated one to seven days.
- Cancelling a pre-order: Rockstar Store orders are handled through its checkout partner Xsolla, and the FAQ explains how to cancel through it.
- Pre-order bonus: the Vintage Vice City Pack is included, though the store adds “while supplies last” for boxed copies.

Should You Still Buy the Box
A box costs the same and gives you something for the shelf, but it plays exactly like a digital copy: you still download everything. It also can’t be lent or resold like a disc once the code is used. If you want the game the moment it unlocks, buying digital avoids any shipping delay. The collectible route Rockstar is selling is its Goodtime State collector’s box, and that one doesn’t include the game at all.
