Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced: How to Get Templar Keys

Edward Kenway crouched on a rooftop above Havana in Black Flag Resynced

You get Templar Keys in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced from two places: one comes automatically from the main story, and the other four are rewards for finishing the Templar Hunt side quest chains in Havana, Nassau, Kingston and Cayman Sound. Take all five keys to the locked gate in your Great Inagua manor to open it and claim the Templar Armor.

The count and the gate did not change in the remake, but the hunts themselves did. Below we cover what Ubisoft changed, where each key comes from, why one hunt stays locked longer than the others, and what is behind the gate.

What Changed in the Remake

Ubisoft’s deep dive on the remake’s additions addresses the hunts directly: “Templar Hunts from the original game have been reworked to meet the standards of modern parkour and provide a commensurate challenge, while also updating the narrative a little to fit better into the updated experience. You can still expect to unlock the same rewards for your hard work by using the five keys on the locked gate in the Hideout.”

So if you played in 2013, the structure is familiar, but do not expect the missions to play out step for step the same. Guides written for the remake even disagree on the final target of one chain, so trust the in-game quest markers.

Key 1: The Story Key

The first key is not a collectible you hunt down. Guides agree it comes from the main story around the time Great Inagua opens up, when Edward deals with the Templar Julien du Casse.

Keys 2 to 5: The Templar Hunts

The remaining four keys each come from a chain of side missions for a different Assassin contact. Guides for the remake list them like this:

  1. Havana: a chain for Rhona Dinsmore that ends with you hunting down the Templar Hilary Flint.
  2. Nassau: a chain that starts with Upton Travers. Guides disagree on who the final target is in the remake, so follow the quest markers rather than an old walkthrough.
  3. Cayman Sound: a chain for Opia Apito that works across the local islands and ends with the Templar Lucia Marquez.
  4. Kingston: a chain for Anto that ends with a strike on the Templar Kenneth Abraham.

One guide counts roughly four missions per chain and says the hunts become available by around Sequence 6, and guides agree that, apart from the story key, they can be done in any order.

The Kingston hunt is the one that stays locked. Guides report it only opens after you finish the main story mission A Governor No Longer, so if the other three are done and Kingston has no quest marker, keep going with the story.

Finishing any one chain also unlocks the Help A Brother Out achievement, which the game awards for completing a Templar Hunt sequence.

Tips for the Reworked Hunts

  • Scout before every assassination. Our guide to Eagle Vision and Observe covers tagging guards and targets from a safe perch. An accessibility review of the remake also notes that tailing targets no longer glow yellow, so keep the camera on them.
  • Expect harder parkour. Ubisoft rebuilt these missions around the new parkour, and Edward can now crouch anywhere and use light and shadow to stay hidden.
  • Keep the Jackdaw ready between cities. The hunts span four regions, so you will sail a lot. Our ship repair guide covers topping up at Harbourmasters on the way, and our swivel gun guide helps with anything you run into at sea.

What the Gate Gives You

Once you have all five keys, return to the manor at your Great Inagua Hideout. Guides place the gate at the back of the main room, with one lock per key. Opening it completes the side quest Damn Fine Gear, and guides list the contents as:

  • The Templar Armor outfit.
  • The Templar Cross trinket, which reduces damage taken from melee attacks when equipped.
  • Reales and Bones, reported as 10,000 Reales and 45 Bones.

Set expectations on the armor. Guides for the remake report that outfits in Resynced carry no stats, so the Templar Armor is a look, not a defensive upgrade. The practical reward is the Templar Cross trinket.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Templar Keys are there in Black Flag Resynced? Five. Ubisoft confirms the remake keeps “the five keys on the locked gate in the Hideout.” One comes from the story and four from Templar Hunts.

Why can’t I start the Kingston Templar Hunt? Guides report the Kingston chain only unlocks after the main story mission A Governor No Longer. Progress the story and the quest marker appears.

Where is the Templar Key gate? In the manor at your Great Inagua Hideout. Guides place it at the back of the main room, with a lock for each key.

Does the Templar Armor have stats in the remake? Guides report it does not, since outfits in Resynced are cosmetic. The useful reward is the Templar Cross trinket, which reduces melee damage taken.

Can you do the Templar Hunts in any order? Yes, apart from the story key. Guides say the four hunts can be done in any order, with Kingston waiting on A Governor No Longer.
