Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: How to Change Tera Type

Terastallized Pokemon facing off in a Tera Raid battle in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

To change a Pokemon’s Tera Type in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, go to the Treasure Eatery in Medali and give the cook 50 Tera Shards of the type you want. The service only opens after you beat Larry, the Medali Gym Leader, whose Gym battle takes place in that same restaurant.

Every change costs a full 50 shards, so the real work is farming them. Below: how to unlock the service, the steps at the restaurant, the fastest shard sources, and how the Stellar type from The Indigo Disk fits in.

How to Unlock Tera Type Changes

The official Trainer’s Guide says the Treasure Eatery will only change Tera Types after you have proven yourself to the chef by completing certain tasks in the game’s storylines. Fan references pin that down: the option opens once you have beaten Larry at the Medali Gym, the Normal-type Gym whose battlefield is inside the Treasure Eatery itself.

If you have not reached Medali yet, it sits in West Province (Area Three), at the foot of Glaseado Mountain and not far from the Zero Gate. Once Larry is down, the cook is available for the rest of the game.

How to Change a Pokemon’s Tera Type

  1. Collect 50 Tera Shards of the type you want. A Fire Tera Type needs 50 Fire Tera Shards, and so on.
  2. Put the Pokemon you want to change in your party.
  3. Travel to Medali. The Flying Taxi from your map app takes you to its Pokemon Center if you have visited it before.
  4. Enter the Treasure Eatery and speak to the cook.
  5. Choose the Pokemon and the new Tera Type, then confirm. The 50 shards are used up.

You can change the same Pokemon as many times as you like, as long as you pay 50 shards each time. Two Pokemon are the exception: Ogerpon from The Teal Mask and Terapagos from The Indigo Disk have fixed Tera Types that cannot be changed.

How to Farm Tera Shards Fast

  • Tera Raid Battles of 3 stars and up. They drop Tera Shards matching the raid Pokemon’s Tera Type, and higher-star raids drop more. This is the main source.
  • Raid Power sandwiches. The official Trainer’s Guide recommends eating a Raid Power meal to increase shard rewards. Match the power to the raid Pokemon’s type; our sandwich guide explains how.
  • The Glimmering Charm (The Teal Mask). Jacq gives it to you on Reveler’s Road in Kitakami after you complete the Kitakami Pokedex. It adds an extra batch of Tera Shards to raid rewards, though fan references note it does nothing for 1-star, 2-star or 7-star raids.
  • The Item Printer (The Indigo Disk). It can print Tera Shards of every type.
  • Hidden items. Stray shards occasionally turn up on the ground in the overworld.

High-star raids overlap with Herba Mystica farming, so you can work toward both at once; our Herba Mystica guide lists which raids to target.

The Stellar Tera Type

The Indigo Disk added a 19th Tera Type, Stellar. Terapagos always has it, but you can give it to other Pokemon at the same Treasure Eatery using 50 Stellar Tera Shards. Those come mainly from wild Stellar Tera Pokemon in the Terarium: fan references say each one you catch or defeat rewards 10 Stellar Tera Shards. The Item Printer can produce them too.

Stellar works differently from the other types. It does not change your Pokemon’s weaknesses or resistances when it Terastallizes. Instead, the first use of each move type in a battle gets a one-time damage boost, and in Tera Raids that boost applies every time.

Things to Know Before You Spend Shards

  • Breeding will not carry it over. Tera Types are not inherited. A hatched Pokemon always gets a Tera Type matching one of its own types, so change it after the Pokemon hatches, not before you breed.
  • Catching can be cheaper than changing. Pokemon from Tera Raids and wild Tera Pokemon often already have unusual Tera Types. Catching the right one saves you 50 shards.
  • Keep your Tera Orb charged. A Pokemon Center visit refills the orb after you Terastallize, as our healing guide notes.
