Directive 8020’s online multiplayer arrives this October, Supermassive Games announced on September 30, 2026, in a Steam post and on the official Dark Pictures X account: “Online Multiplayer docks into the Cassiopeia this October.” The studio did not give a day, and says it “will share more information soon.”
What the Update Adds
Supermassive has described this mode since before launch. In a March 2026 Steam post, it said Directive 8020 would “support five-player online multiplayer in a free post-launch update, mirroring the couch co-op experience and bringing it online,” and it repeated the “free post-launch update” line when pre-orders opened in April. So:
- It’s free for everyone who owns the game.
- Up to five players can share the story online, the same way they already can on one couch.
Directive 8020 launched on May 12, 2026, on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so owners have waited almost five months for the online half of its multiplayer.
What We Don’t Know Yet
Supermassive’s announcement leaves several questions open:
- The exact date in October.
- Crossplay, and whether all three platforms get the update at once.
- Mixing couch and online players in the same session.
Some fan sites are already describing a mode name, crossplay and mixed couch-and-online play. None of that appears in Supermassive’s own posts, so treat it as unconfirmed until the studio shares its promised details.
What This Means for Players
If you’ve been waiting to play Directive 8020 with friends who aren’t in the room, the wait is nearly over, and it won’t cost anything extra. It’s also good timing for a group horror night in October.
