Active Matter: Whether It Is Coming to Xbox and PS5

It is not coming, because it is already here: Active Matter launched on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 15, 2026, the same day as its Steam release. The Standard Edition costs $29.99 on both consoles, and there is no PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo version.

This guide covers where the game is sold today, what the console versions support, how cross-play and progress work between consoles and PC, what each console edition costs, and what happened to the console demos. It reflects the full release as of update 0.4.0.156 (September 26, 2026), verified against the official site, the store listings and the developer’s patch notes.

Every Platform Active Matter Is On

Developer Matter Team and publisher Gaijin confirmed the three-platform launch in their release announcement: “Active Matter is out now on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, as well as in the Gaijin Store for PC.”

Platform Where to buy Standard price
PlayStation 5 PlayStation Store $29.99
Xbox Series X and Series S Xbox Store $29.99
PC Steam or the Gaijin Store $29.99

Neither console store lists a last-generation version. The PlayStation Store entry is PS5 only, and the Xbox listing is marked “Optimized for Xbox Series X|S” with no Xbox One entry. Nothing has been announced for Switch 2.

What the Console Versions Support

The two console listings spell out slightly different feature sets:

  • PS5: the PlayStation Store lists “PS5 Pro Enhanced,” DualSense vibration support, up to 16 network players and “Online play required.”
  • Xbox Series X|S: the Xbox Store lists online co-op for 2 to 3 players, online multiplayer for 2 to 16, 4K Ultra HD, HDR10, 60 fps and above, cross-platform multiplayer and co-op, achievements and cloud saves.

Both versions are online only, and both put online play behind the console’s subscription. The Xbox listing states that “Online multiplayer on console requires XBOX Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate (subscriptions sold separately).” Active Matter is a paid game, so on PS5 you should expect to need PlayStation Plus for online play as well. It is not included in any Game Pass tier; you buy it outright.

The Xbox listing also carries an “Xbox Play Anywhere” flag and names PC as a platform, while the developer’s own FAQ only mentions Steam and the Gaijin Store for PC. Until Gaijin says otherwise, we would not buy on Xbox counting on a free Windows copy.

Cross-Play and Progress Between Consoles and PC

Cross-play is in, with a choice of who you meet. Per the developer’s September 7 Q and A, there are three matchmaking options: your platform only, consoles only (Xbox plus PlayStation), or any platform (PC plus consoles). They are separate queues, and each player has to select or confirm the wider pools in settings. The official FAQ confirms console players pick from those same three options.

The developer said back in July that Isolated Raids (the PvE mode, where only your squad is in the zone) would “definitely support cross-play,” while Open Raids need consent from players on both sides because of platform differences like aim assist.

Progress is a different story. The FAQ is direct: “Can I transfer my progress between the PC and console versions of Active Matter? No. Shared progress is available only between the Steam and Gaijin.Net versions on PC.” If you already have a Steam character, starting on PS5 or Xbox means starting over.

Console Editions and Prices

Both console stores sell the same three editions at the same prices:

Edition PS5 and Xbox price What it adds
Standard $29.99 25,000 Credits, 300 Prime (one time), a starter kit of weapons and gear
Advanced $49.99 60,000 Credits, 1,300 Prime, a storage and a Replicator queue expansion, more gear
Deluxe $99.99 185,000 Credits, 5,500 Prime, the “Reaper” and “Knight” Body Sleeves, three storage expansions, more gear

Per the FAQ, the editions “differ in their starting selection of weapons, equipment, and in-game resources; otherwise, the content available to buyers is identical.” Every mode is in the Standard Edition. The PlayStation and Xbox stores also sell Advanced and Deluxe upgrades as add-ons, so you can start on Standard and move up later. The Elite Squad Edition (Deluxe plus two Standard keys for friends) is a Gaijin Store exclusive for PC, and the digital soundtrack bundled with Deluxe is a Steam extra, so neither applies to console.

Console Demos and Controls

There is no console demo right now. Xbox players got one from June 4 to June 30, 2026, with every mode included, progression capped at character level 6 and Monolith Access Level 3 (GAMMA), and progress carried into the full game. The developer said in July that a PS5 demo “will definitely be available, just later,” then said in August that further demos were “unlikely,” and none ran on PlayStation before launch.

On controls, the September 7 Q and A says feedback from the Xbox demo shaped the launch controller settings, and launch-week patches kept adding gamepad fixes, such as the restored LT and RT tab switching on PS5 in update 0.4.0.132. In July the team also said it would work on keyboard and mouse support for consoles, but no console keyboard support has been announced since. If you play the Steam version with a pad, Steam lists full controller support, and our guides to pairing a PS5 controller and connecting an Xbox controller to PC cover the setup.
