ArcheAge Chronicles: Is It an MMO? Answered

Yes, ArcheAge Chronicles is an MMO. XLGAMES sells it as an “Open World Action MMORPG,” Steam lists it as massively multiplayer, and you play on always-online servers shared with other players, with guilds, raids, trading and PvP. It is a lighter, solo-friendly kind of MMO, though, which is why the studio spent 2025 calling it “not a traditional MMORPG” and why so many people still search whether it counts.

ArcheAge Chronicles is in Steam Early Access from November 3, 2026, at 3 PM PST (6 PM EST). Below is how XLGAMES’ description changed, what makes the game an MMO, which parts play more like a single-player RPG, and how it compares with the original ArcheAge. It is verified against the Steam store page, XLGAMES’ Steam posts and executive producer Yongjin Ham’s developer videos.

Why People Say It Is Not an MMO

The confusion comes from XLGAMES itself. When the game was revealed at Sony’s State of Play in September 2024, it was announced as an “online action RPG,” and Ham’s first letter promised a shift “away from large-scale competitive battles to smaller group activities.”

In July 2025, his producer’s letter went further: “this isn’t ArcheAge 2. It’s not a traditional MMORPG. What we’re making is a discovery-driven online action RPG.” In an interview published the next day, XLGAMES told Massively OP the game was “an exploration-driven action RPG” with online elements such as trading, housing and crafting, described as a hybrid of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and ArcheAge.

Since XLGAMES took over publishing in September 2026, the label has swung back:

  • The official site’s title calls it an “Open World Action MMORPG.”
  • In his October 7 video, which is in Korean, Ham summed the game up (in our translation) as an open-world action MMORPG built more around exploration and cooperation than competition.
  • The store page says “As an MMO, ArcheAge Chronicles truly comes to life when players come together,” and invites you to “experience the next evolution of the MMORPG genre.”
  • XLGAMES’ November 3 notice calls it “an MMORPG where many players share the same world and play together.”

Ham explained the in-between feel in an October 31 video: “Other players come and go in the MMO world, but the focus is on action combat and solo adventures. On the other hand, it’s not quite what you’d expect from a traditional action game either, because other players are always there alongside you, just like in an MMO.”

What Makes It an MMO

  • Shared servers. You pick a regional server (North America East and West, Europe Central, Asia East and South, plus Brazil and Singapore), and your character lives there. XLGAMES confirmed there are no server transfers and no cross-server play during Early Access.
  • Busy channels. Each zone is split into channels that typically hold about 100 players, per Global PM Don’s PvP post. XLGAMES says that cap is a design choice, so the world feels alive without feeling crowded.
  • Group content. The store page lists dungeons, raids, and company and guild activities. Dungeons take a party of up to four, field bosses roam the open world, and one demo preview described nearby players teaming up on bosses without forming a party.
  • PvP. Opt-in PvP channels sit alongside the standard ones in every zone.
  • A player economy. Crafting, trading and housing return from the original. XLGAMES even switched off Steam Family Sharing because account sharing “may affect account management and the in-game economy.”
  • Always online. There is no offline mode, and the store page lists kernel-level anti-cheat (XIGNCODE3).

What Plays More Like a Single-Player RPG

  • Story first. Each of the three Early Access regions has more than 10 hours of main quests, Ham said, and he estimated that playing through the adventure content from start to finish would take him more than 50 hours.
  • Private moments. Dungeons and some points of interest are instanced for you or your party, so nobody runs in and finishes a story fight for you.
  • No racing other players. Treasure chests and other discoveries open once per character, so you never have to beat anyone to them.
  • Progress through exploration. Most EXP comes from quests and discovery, and trait points come from bosses guarding Raeven’s Coilstones rather than from grinding.
  • Optional PvP. Nobody can attack you in a standard channel.
  • No subscription. It is a one-time purchase, covered in our free-to-play guide.

Ham’s goal, in that October 31 video, was a game “comfortable and enjoyable even when you’re playing alone,” which also makes “playing together enjoyable, too.”

ArcheAge vs ArcheAge Chronicles

ArcheAge (original) ArcheAge Chronicles
Price model in the West Free to play, optional Patron subscription Buy-to-play, $29.99 in Early Access
PvP Faction warfare (Ham calls it “an RvR game”) Opt-in PvP channels
Classes Skill trees combined into many class combinations Four fixed classes, two weapons each
Where the fun sits Ham: it “only really got interesting once you reached the level cap” Exploration and story throughout
Group focus Large-scale competitive battles “Smaller group activities,” per Ham’s 2024 letter

Can You Play It Solo?

Yes. XLGAMES says dungeons can be taken on solo, several solo-only dungeon sections can now be played in a party too, and the story is built for one player. You still need an internet connection, and other players will be in the world around you. If you plan to group up, our classes guide explains what each class brings, and our guide to gender-locked classes covers the main character creation catch.

For another new MMO with a solo-friendly pitch, our guide to playing AION 2 solo covers NCSOFT’s take, and Jagex’s RS4 is a third MMO to watch.
