Assassin’s Creed Shadows Romance: How to Unlock Every Relationship

Assassin's Creed Shadows official screenshot

Naoe and Yasuke each have romance options in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and every romance line is marked with a heart icon in dialogue, so you cannot start one by accident. The arcs do not conflict with each other, so you are not locked out of one by pursuing another.

The one thing that does lock them out is Canon Mode. Play in Canon Mode and romance options are unavailable entirely.

How the System Works

Romances play out through dialogue choices across main story quests and side content. When a romantic option is available, the heart icon marks it. Choosing non-heart options keeps the relationship platonic and closes nothing else off.

Because the arcs are independent, you can pursue every available romance in a single playthrough. There is no jealousy system and no point where one choice forecloses another.

Naoe’s Romance Options

Gennojo. You meet him during the Missing Missive quest. The line that starts the romance is “Let’s not fight.” He is modelled on and performed by the Japanese actor Mackenyu.

Katsuhime. The only woman Naoe can romance, and one of the longest arcs in the game with several points where she can be recruited. The first meeting is during Showdown in Sakamoto, where the line to pick is “I like your Teppo.”

Koshire. The most straightforward of Naoe’s options. The injured fighter forms a connection with her quickly and the arc needs less steering than the others.

Yasuke’s Romance Options

Ibuki. A ronin who begins openly hostile toward Yasuke over his role in Oda Nobunaga’s army. The arc is about changing that, which makes it the most gradual of his options.

Rin. She is looking to start over and needs someone to teach her to defend herself. Worth knowing before you start: Rin’s follow-up quests only become active when you move into a new season, so this one cannot be rushed. If her questline appears stalled, it is waiting on time passing rather than on anything you have missed.

What You Actually Get

Set expectations here, because this is where a lot of misinformation circulates. Romance rewards in AC Shadows are story and cosmetic, not mechanical. You get new cutscenes, unique dialogue and character depth, and in some cases a wearable item or an accessory, such as Hori Hidemasa’s helmet, or an amulet or engraving from particular arcs.

There is no romance-gated combat perk and no economy bonus attached to finishing one. Pursue these for the writing and the characters, not for a build advantage.

Tips Most Players Miss

  • Watch for the heart before you commit. It is the only signal that a line is romantic, and it is easy to skim past in a long conversation.
  • Do not start in Canon Mode if romance matters to you, because none of it will be available.
  • Give Rin time. Her arc is gated behind a season change, not behind a quest you have missed.

Several of these arcs run alongside the alliance quests that also expand your roster, and recruiting and using allies covers that side of it. Our full Assassin’s Creed Shadows guides cover the rest of the campaign.
