The best Bannerlord mods fix what vanilla Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord leaves thin: diplomacy, garrison management, battle AI and the late-game grind. The 30 below run from the libraries almost every mod needs, through campaign and combat overhauls, to full total conversions set in Westeros and Middle-earth. We checked every entry against its creator’s own page on September 21, 2026. “Current version” here means the stable Bannerlord v1.4.8 and War Sails v1.2.8 build TaleWorlds released on August 10, 2026. A public v1.5 beta is also running, and several mods already offer a separate beta file.
Two setup facts matter more than anything else. First, most script mods depend on the same four libraries: Harmony, ButterLib, UIExtenderEx and Mod Configuration Menu (MCM). Install those first and keep them at the top of your load order. Second, the BUTR team’s Bannerlord Software Extender (BLSE) adds an extended launcher that flags missing dependencies and version mismatches before the game crashes. War Sails, the paid naval expansion that launched on November 26, 2025, is optional for most mods here, but a few now require it, and we say so on each entry. If you enjoy digging through lists like this, our Valheim mods roundup follows the same rules.
Essentials: Libraries and Launcher
These five do nothing visible on their own. Nearly every other mod on this list needs some or all of them.

1. Harmony
Harmony is the code-patching library that lets script mods change the game’s methods at runtime without overwriting each other. This Nexus distribution exists so every mod in a load order shares one up-to-date copy, which cuts down on conflicts, and its page says it should sit first in your load order, above even ButterLib and MCM. It has been downloaded more than 6.4 million times. Creator: Andreas Pardeike (library), distributed by Aragas. Download: Harmony on Nexus Mods.

2. ButterLib
ButterLib is the BUTR team’s shared toolkit of common functions for mod developers, and it provides the crash reports that most mod authors ask for when you report a bug. Like Harmony, it adds nothing by itself, but Diplomacy, Retinues, BattleSize Resized and many others list it as a hard requirement. It was updated in August 2026. Creator: BUTR Team. Needs: Harmony. Download: ButterLib on Nexus Mods.

3. UIExtenderEx
UIExtenderEx lets several mods edit the same game screens at once instead of replacing each other’s interface files. Its page carries one useful warning: if the game crashes on start, an old “Fixed Launcher” install that copied its own Harmony file is the usual culprit. With more than 55,000 endorsements, it is one of the most endorsed files for the game. Creator: BUTR Team. Needs: Harmony. Download: UIExtenderEx on Nexus Mods.

4. Mod Configuration Menu (MCM)
MCM adds a Mod Options screen to the main menu, so you can change a mod’s settings with sliders and toggles instead of editing XML files. It is the most endorsed Bannerlord mod on Nexus, with more than 63,000 endorsements and over 5 million downloads, and most mods on this list plug their settings into it. Creator: Aragas. Needs: Harmony, UIExtenderEx, ButterLib. Download: Mod Configuration Menu on Nexus Mods.

5. Bannerlord Software Extender (BLSE)
BLSE is the launcher most modders now recommend. Run its LauncherEx executable and you get the extended launcher that used to be called BUTRLoader, with hints that explain why a mod cannot be enabled, a binary compatibility check against the current game version, and support for community load-order metadata. The Diplomacy team calls it strongly recommended. Creator: BUTR Team. Needs: Harmony. Download: BLSE on Nexus Mods.
Campaign, Kingdoms and Diplomacy
The sandbox campaign is where Bannerlord players spend hundreds of hours, and these mods give it more depth.

6. Diplomacy
Diplomacy is the essential campaign mod. It adds non-aggression pacts, messengers, war exhaustion, expansionism, civil wars, fief grants inside your kingdom, and the option to secede or force a ruler to abdicate. Its page says it can be added mid-game and removed at any time. It was updated on September 19, 2026, and supports every build from v1.4.0 to v1.4.8 plus the v1.5 beta. Creator: Diplomacy Team. Needs: Harmony, ButterLib, UIExtenderEx, MCM. Download: Diplomacy on Nexus Mods.

7. Improved Garrisons
Improved Garrisons adds a management layer to every fief you own: automatic recruitment from nearby villages, prisoner recruitment over time, garrison training with troop templates, recruiter parties and guard parties with their own AI to defend your lands. It is standalone, needs no libraries, and its author says it is safe to install and update mid-campaign. The current file is built for v1.4.8. Creator: Sidies. Download: Improved Garrisons on Nexus Mods.

8. Retinues
Retinues lets you build an army that is actually yours. You recruit limited elite retinues from your culture’s troops, unlock gear by defeating enemies, and promote them through tiers. Once you own a fief you can redesign your clan’s troop tree, and founding a kingdom opens kingdom troop trees and a king’s guard. Its page says it can be added to or removed from an ongoing save. Creator: bolaft. Needs: Harmony, ButterLib, UIExtenderEx, MCM. Download: Retinues on Nexus Mods.

9. Fourberie (Cunning)
Fourberie turns Bannerlord into a rogue’s game. You can lead a bandit horde from a safe house, build a criminal enterprise with local gang leaders, pickpocket, infiltrate castles to assassinate lords, incite riots and run a scheme room with spies, saboteurs and assassins. AI clans you wrong also hold grudges and scheme back. The v1.4.8.0 file is the current stable release, with a v1.5 beta file alongside it. Creator: Spinozart1. Download: Fourberie on Nexus Mods.

10. Education
Education adds book vendors across Calradia who sell books and scrolls on subjects like engineering, medicine, leadership and tactics. First your character learns to read, then works through the texts to gain skills, and its page also mentions training with scholars and companions. It is a slow, flavorful way to shore up weak skills. The current file supports v1.4.7 and v1.4.8, and the page notes a possible conflict with Armies and Armories. Creator: Litauen and TadasTheLithuanian. Download: Education on Nexus Mods.

11. Marry Anyone
Vanilla Bannerlord limits who you can court. Marry Anyone lets you marry faction leaders, companions and ordinary townsfolk, with configurable options including multiple spouses. The current 3.6.0.2 file, updated September 13, 2026, covers game versions 1.4.x and 1.5.x, and its author says to place it last in your load order. Creator: RoGreat, maintained by Arhamis. Download: Marry Anyone on Nexus Mods.

12. Kill Bandits Raise Relations
A small mod with a big effect on early game politics. Defeating bandits now raises your relation with notables in nearby towns and villages, the same way clearing a hideout does, and your Charm skill scales the gain. That makes bandit hunting a real path to recruiting better troops. Version 4.0.1 updated it for the 1.4 branch in August 2026. Creator: Clickers2223. Needs: MCM (default version). Download: Kill Bandits Raise Relations on Nexus Mods.
Battles and Combat
Bannerlord’s battles are the reason most people play. These mods make them smarter, bigger and harder.

13. Realistic Battle Mod
Realistic Battle Mod (RBM) reworks armor and damage using experimental data, so armor matters, projectiles hit with simulated kinetic energy, and couched lances depend on horse speed and weight. Its AI module adds proper formations and culture-specific tactics, and battles run much longer. It is one of the most endorsed combat mods for the game, and it was updated on September 17, 2026, with a separate submod for War Sails players. Creator: Marnah93 and Philozoraptor. Download: Realistic Battle Mod on Nexus Mods.

14. RTS Camera
RTS Camera gives you a free-flying command camera and a reworked order system, so you can direct a battle like a strategy game instead of from your horse. You can also swap control to a soldier mid-fight. It does not touch your save, works with or without War Sails, and ships separate files for 1.3.x, 1.4.x and the 1.5 beta. Creator: LiZhenhuan1019, Lkoinw and Norbivar. Download: RTS Camera on Nexus Mods.

15. Immersive Battlefields
Immersive Battlefields makes orders feel shouted rather than clicked. Each formation’s sergeant repeats and passes on your commands, soldiers yell when you order a charge, and horn sounds can be customized. Its author has also added compatibility fixes for Serve as Soldier and The Old Realms. Files are available for 1.4.x and the 1.5 beta, both with War Sails support. Creator: ShutUpMalfoy. Download: Immersive Battlefields on Nexus Mods.

16. Raise your Banner
Vanilla battles look oddly bare of flags. Raise your Banner puts more banners on the field, carried by hand or on the back, with ratios you can set per formation and options for siege attackers and defenders. It has more than 9,000 endorsements. The main file is for 1.4.x with War Sails, and an update file covers the 1.5 beta. Creator: ShutUpMalfoy. Needs: Banner Fix. Download: Raise your Banner on Nexus Mods.

17. Reinforcement System
In vanilla, nearby friendly parties watch your battle from the campaign map. Reinforcement System lets nearby AI parties and armies ride in as reinforcements mid-battle, with settings for search radius and how likely they are to join. Its changelog notes it switches itself off in naval battles for compatibility. The current V2.4.8 file supports 1.4.x and War Sails. Creator: ShutUpMalfoy. Download: Reinforcement System on Nexus Mods.

18. BattleSize Resized
BattleSize Resized raises the battle size cap to anywhere between 1,200 and 2,040 units using the game’s own settings menu, in campaign, sandbox and custom battles. Its author says it only runs code before a battle loads, so it adds no cost during the fight itself, but warns that values near 2,000 are very demanding on your CPU. The 1.4.x file is labeled a beta and supports War Sails. Creator: Vombora. Needs: Harmony, ButterLib, UIExtenderEx, MCM. Download: BattleSize Resized on Nexus Mods.

19. Realistic Weather
Realistic Weather adds rain, snow and fog with variable density, plus desert dust storms, to both the campaign map and battles. On the map, weather cuts visibility, morale and movement speed. In battle, it affects ranged accuracy, AI aim and morale, and it also changes stamina drain if you run Realistic Battle Mod. The newest file targets the 1.5 beta, with a 1.4.x file alongside it. Creator: OrderWOPower. Download: Realistic Weather on Nexus Mods.

20. Xorberax’s Legacy
Xorberax’s classic mods, including Cut Through Everyone, stopped working years ago, and this pack brings them back in one module with MCM settings. It includes Cut Through Everyone (weapons slice through several enemies), Deadly Combat, Deadly Horse Charges, Friendly Fire, Banks of Calradia, Honest Work and Scholars of Calradia. Its maintainer says Xorberax approved the reupload. The current file is built for v1.4.8. Creator: Xorberax, maintained by TheSchwarz1. Needs: Harmony, ButterLib, UIExtenderEx, MCM. Download: Xorberax’s Legacy on Nexus Mods.

21. DismembermentPlus
Mature content. DismembermentPlus adds dismemberment and decapitation to battles, with realism or chance settings deciding when a killing blow severs a limb. It is a rework of jedijosh920’s original Dismemberment mod, kept alive after the original stopped updating, and its page says it works in campaign and sandbox but not custom battles. Version 2.0.8.8 is built for v1.4.8. Creator: TheSchwarz1 (original concept by jedijosh920). Download: DismembermentPlus on Nexus Mods.
Troops, Gear and Characters

22. Open Source Armory
The Open Source Armory combines many popular armor and weapon mods into one file, with more than 1,500 lore-friendly items built around vanilla aesthetics and real historical references. Items appear in town shops rather than on NPCs, so its page suggests pairing it with a troop overhaul. Version 2.0.0 requires Bannerlord 1.4.x, and upgrading from an older version means deleting the old OSA files first. Creator: The Open Source Armory Team. Download: Open Source Armory on Nexus Mods.

23. De Re Militari
De Re Militari rebuilds every faction’s troops so peasant levies stay peasants. Common recruits split into irregular and regular trees with hard caps on how well equipped they can become, which slows the snowball where every army ends up as elite heavy infantry. As of version 6.0.0, it requires War Sails. Its author also warns it cannot be removed from a save once your parties have used its units. Creator: Luke Danger. Needs: War Sails DLC, Adonnay’s Troop Changer, Realistic Battle Mod (for intended balance). Download: De Re Militari on Nexus Mods.

24. Better Smithing Continued
Better Smithing Continued ports Arganancer’s Better Smithing to the current game. You can save, load and edit weapon designs across all your saves, and the smelting screen stays fast even with hundreds of distinct weapons in your inventory. If smithing is how your character makes money, it saves a lot of clicking. The current file supports v1.4.5 and later, and works with War Sails. Creator: SkaLoLaz. Download: Better Smithing Continued on Nexus Mods.

25. Women in Calradia
Women in Calradia adds 17 female companions and 3 male companions, each with a custom appearance, backstory and equipment, drawn from Calradia’s different cultures. They spawn as new wanderers, so the mod can be installed mid-playthrough, and an optional NPC Replacer version swaps out existing wanderers instead. The main file supports 1.4.x and War Sails. Creator: ShutUpMalfoy. Download: Women in Calradia on Nexus Mods.
Quality of Life

26. Better Time
Bannerlord’s fast forward tops out at 4x, which drags when you are waiting to heal or for a siege to start. Better Time adds faster speed buttons, with defaults of 4x, 8x and 16x that you can change through MCM. Its page says it is safe to install on and uninstall from an existing save. OrderWOPower took it over with Shemiroth’s permission and tested it on 1.4.x. Creator: Shemiroth, maintained by OrderWOPower. Download: Better Time on Nexus Mods.

27. Troop Sorting
Troop Sorting automatically sorts troops and prisoners on the party screen, garrison screen, clan screen and more, and adds a count of heroes, cavalry, horse archers, infantry and archers to the party overview. Ctrl plus S re-sorts, Ctrl plus a number switches between saved sort orders, and Ctrl plus U auto-upgrades troops with a single upgrade path. The main file targets v1.4.7, with beta files for 1.5. Creator: Snah79. Download: Troop Sorting on Nexus Mods.
Total Conversions
Total conversions replace Calradia entirely. Start a new campaign for each, and do not mix them with the troop or map mods above unless their pages say it is safe.

28. Realm of Thrones
Realm of Thrones turns Calradia into Westeros and Essos during the War of the Five Kings, with the major houses, characters and faction-specific troops from Game of Thrones. It is one of the most popular Bannerlord mods, with more than 13,000 endorsements. Version 8.1.2, uploaded August 24, 2026, is built for Bannerlord 1.4.8 and requires War Sails. Players without the DLC can use the final non-War Sails version, 7.1, which needs the game rolled back to 1.3.15. Creator: Carolina Warlord. Needs: Harmony, UIExtenderEx, MCM, War Sails DLC (for 8.x). Download: Realm of Thrones on Nexus Mods.

29. Tales from the Age of Men
Tales from the Age of Men sets Bannerlord in Middle-earth around the year 3000 of the Third Age, with custom maps and troop trees for kingdoms like Gondor, Rohan, Mordor and Harad. Its team describes longer lifespans that match the lore and marriage limited by race and alignment. The newest public version, uploaded September 14, 2026, is for Bannerlord 1.4.8. Its page says it does not work on the Xbox Game Pass version. Creator: Haterade and the TAOM team. Download: Tales from the Age of Men on Nexus Mods.

30. Empires of Europe 1100
Empires of Europe 1100 brings the campaign to medieval Europe around the year 1100, with historical kingdoms, holy war parties, spawn events, a custom battle module and new armor. Version 1.4.7.3 requires Bannerlord 1.4.7 or later, and War Sails support comes through the mod’s compatibility patch. The team releases public versions twice a year, with earlier builds for paying Patreon supporters. Creator: Fatrod. Download: Empires of Europe 1100 on Nexus Mods.
How We Chose These Mods
Every mod here was checked against its creator’s own Nexus Mods page on September 21, 2026, for three things: that it is still downloadable, that its current file names a supported game version on the 1.4 branch (or that it has been updated since that branch went live), and that it comes from the creator or an openly credited maintainer. We favored mods with long track records and high endorsement counts, and we left out anything that its own page says is built only for 1.3 or older, including several longtime favorites that have not caught up yet. We used the same process for our 50 best Sims 4 mods.
Download only from the creator pages linked above. Reupload sites and bundled mod packs are the most common source of outdated or malicious files. If you install manually rather than through a mod manager, several of these pages note that Windows can block a mod’s DLL files, so right-click each DLL, open Properties and tick Unblock, or extract with 7-Zip. Some of these authors also publish on the Steam Workshop, but the Nexus pages linked here are the ones we verified, so compare file dates if you subscribe there instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Bannerlord mods should I install first? Install Harmony, ButterLib, UIExtenderEx and Mod Configuration Menu, then BLSE for its extended launcher. After that, Diplomacy, Improved Garrisons and Realistic Battle Mod are the most common first additions.
Why did my Bannerlord mods stop working after an update? Script mods are compiled against a specific game version, and TaleWorlds patches often break them. Stay on the stable branch rather than the beta if you run a big mod list, and check each mod’s page for a new file before loading your save.
Do Bannerlord mods work on PS5 or Xbox? No. These mods are for the PC version. Some also support the PC Game Pass version, but not all do: Tales from the Age of Men, for example, says it does not work there.
Do I need War Sails to use mods? Most mods on this list work with or without the War Sails DLC. A few now require it, including De Re Militari and the current Realm of Thrones. If you buy the DLC only for a mod and change your mind, our guide to refunding games on Steam explains how Steam refunds work.
Are Bannerlord mods free? Yes. Every mod on this list is free on Nexus Mods. Some teams, like Empires of Europe 1100, give Patreon supporters builds ahead of the free public release. Bannerlord’s campaign is single-player, so if you want something to play with friends, see our best PC co-op games of 2026.
