The perk almost everyone agrees you should not skip in The Blood of Dawnwalker is Sustained Focus in the Swordmastery tree, because it raises your total Activation Charges, and every active ability in all three trees draws from that same pool. After that, the defensive Swordmastery line is the reliable opening.
How the Trees Work
There are three: Swordmastery, which functions day and night, Vampirism, which is night-only, and Witchcraft, the daytime magic and hex tree.
You earn one skill point per level from combat and quest experience. When you have an unspent point, a green up arrow appears beside your health bar. Perks have ranks, so extra points raise their effectiveness rather than just unlocking new nodes, and a few level through other means entirely: Stinging Blade advances through manuals, and Razorsharp Claws reportedly advances by raising Corruption.
Start With Swordmastery
Swordmastery is the recommended first investment for one blunt reason: it works in both forms. Vampirism perks are worth nothing during daylight hours, which is half your campaign, and Vale Sangora’s clock does not let you simply skip the days. Our time limit guide covers that pressure.
The defensive column is the strongest opening in the game:
Omniblock 1 → Perfect Riposte 1 → Counterattack 1
That sequence gives you a perfect block, then a damage-boosted riposte off it, and it works against every enemy type in the game. Combat here is built around blocking and countering rather than out-damaging things, so this line is less a preference than the intended way to play. It is also what makes the Ambrus duel manageable.
Beyond that, Perfect Block, Restless Blade for sword ability cooldowns, and Endless Effort are all solid.
Worthwhile Picks in the Other Trees
Vampirism: Endless Ferocity reduces cooldowns on critical hits, Blood Theft adds lifesteal, and Razorsharp Claws drives claw damage if you are going that route. Mercurial Fervour deserves a single point purely for faster daytime travel, which converts directly into saved Time Segments.
Witchcraft: Forbidden Sigils grants more witchcraft ability slots, with Frugal Witchcraft and Witchcraft Mastery supporting a hex build. Remember that casting hexes costs health, so a witchcraft build leans harder on your healing supply.
The Decision You Cannot Undo
There are nine Ultimate Perks, three per tree, each costing 35 skill points. Taking one permanently disables the other two in that tree for the rest of the playthrough.
That is the single biggest build decision in the game, and it deserves thought well before you can afford one. Our Ultimate Perks guide covers the nine and what the lockout actually costs you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best first perk?
Sustained Focus in Swordmastery. It raises Activation Charges, which every active ability in all three trees consumes.
Which tree should I invest in first?
Swordmastery, because it works in both human and vampire form. Vampirism perks are inactive during the day.
Can I respec?
Yes. Our respec guide covers how and what it costs.
How many skill points do I get per level?
One, earned from combat and quest experience. A green arrow by the health bar means you have an unspent point.
