Respeccing in Borderlands 4 is cheap, unlimited, and available early: find a Respec Machine in any faction settlement, with the first one at The Launchpad, reachable during the third story mission (“Down and Outbound”). Here’s how the system works and what it actually costs.
Where to Respec
Respec Machines live in faction settlements across Kairos. The earliest is at The Launchpad, and every major settlement you liberate adds another to your map. Walk up, interact, and the skill interface opens.
How It Works
- Reset one tree or everything. The machine lets you refund a single skill tree or your entire allocation, so experimenting with one branch doesn’t force a full rebuild.
- You’re charged when you exit the machine, not per click, so you can freely shuffle points around inside the interface and only pay once on the way out.
- Unlimited uses. There’s no cooldown or cap; respeccing is a tool, not a penalty.
What It Costs
Respecs cost cash, scaling with your wealth (roughly a tenth of your money on hand, so it always stings the same amount relative to your wallet and never blocks you). Resetting your Specialization progression is the separate, pricier case, costing Eridium rather than cash.
When to Respec
- Every new gear centerpiece. Borderlands 4 builds form around gear; when a new Legendary or Pearlescent changes your damage plan, re-point the tree to match.
- Between UVH rank attempts. The rank-up bosses punish unfocused builds, and a targeted respec is free-ish compared to banging your head at +800% enemy health.
- After the level cap raise. September’s update added ten more levels of skill points; a respec lets you restructure around the deeper tree access rather than just topping up.
Respec Etiquette for Co-op
Respeccing mid-session is fine (find a settlement machine), but the interface pauses only you, not the world, so don’t open it during a raid phase; your team will describe your build back to you in colorful terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
When does respeccing unlock? As soon as you can reach a settlement machine, practically from story mission three onward.
Does respeccing refund everything? All skill points return; your gear, levels, and progression are untouched. Specialization resets are the separate Eridium case.
Can Loveless (the new Vault Hunter) respec too? Yes, the machines serve every character, including the new DLC hunter.
Is there any build-lock like other RPGs this year? No. Borderlands 4 is the anti-permanence RPG: experimenting is the intended playstyle, and the cost scaling keeps it affordable at every level.
