There is no repair system in Breath of the Wild. No blacksmith, no repair menu, no whetstone. Weapons break and that is the design. The one genuine exception is the Rock Octorok, which will swallow gear you throw into its mouth and spit it back out restored.
Where the Rock Octoroks Are
They live in rocky and volcanic terrain, and the practical place to find them is Eldin, particularly along the northern path toward the mines near Goron City and around Shae Mo’sah Shrine. They also appear in the Gerudo Highlands.
They disguise themselves as rocks, which is why you can walk past a dozen without noticing. They reveal themselves when they inhale to launch a boulder at you.
How the Trick Works
- Find a Rock Octorok and get its attention.
- Wait for it to start inhaling, the wind-up before it spits a rock.
- Throw your weapon into its mouth during that inhale.
- It crunches the item and fires it back out, restored.
For shields, which cannot be thrown, drop them on the ground in front of where the Octorok surfaces instead.
One warning worth taking seriously: the item comes back out at speed, and being hit by your own returning weapon does damage. Stand to the side.
What You Get Back
Feeding it rusty gear is where this shines, because the rusty item comes back as a clean counterpart of a random tier. Reported odds put it at roughly 50 percent Traveler’s, 35 percent Soldier’s, 10 percent Knight’s and 5 percent Royal.
Those percentages come from player testing rather than from Nintendo. The direction is reliable even if the exact numbers are not: most of the time you get something modest, occasionally something very good.
The Limit
One weapon per Octorok. Once it has eaten something, that particular Octorok is done until the next Blood Moon.
That makes this a route rather than a repair shop: find several Octoroks, carry several rusty items, and clear them in one trip. Coming back the same day with a second sword achieves nothing.
What to Do Instead
For everything that is not rusty gear, the answer is to stop treating weapons as possessions. The game hands out replacements constantly, and hoarding a good weapon you never use is worse than using it until it breaks.
The Master Sword is the exception that proves it: it does not break permanently, it runs out of energy and recharges. Our guide on how to get the Master Sword covers it, and our guide on Flurry Rush covers the technique that wins fights without spending durability at all.
