Zelda Breath of the Wild: How to Get the Warm Doublet

Official key art for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Warm Doublet in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild comes from the Old Man on the Great Plateau, and there are two ways to get it.

The intended route is cooking a dish from his diary. The shortcut is climbing a freezing mountain to meet him at the top.

Route One: The Diary Recipe

Visit the Woodcutter’s House on the Great Plateau and read the Old Man’s Diary. It contains a recipe for Spicy Meat and Seafood Fry, except he has forgotten the third ingredient.

You need three things:

  • Raw Meat, from hunting boars, foxes and other animals around the plateau
  • Spicy Pepper, found at the Bokoblin Tree Fort on the south side of the bridge across the River of the Damned
  • Hyrule Bass, the ingredient he could not recall

Cook all three together in a cooking pot, then find the Old Man and speak to him. When the option appears to say you have already cooked something, take it, and he hands over the Warm Doublet.

Route Two: Climb Mount Hylia

If you would rather skip the errand, you can reach the summit of Mount Hylia and meet him there.

The catch is the cold, which is exactly what the doublet exists to solve. You get around it by eating Spicy Peppers for temporary cold resistance and making the climb before it wears off.

It is a chicken-and-egg problem solved with fruit, and it works.

Which Route to Take

The recipe route is safer and teaches you the cooking system, which you will use constantly for the rest of the game.

The mountain route is faster if you already have Spicy Peppers and understand that cold resistance is temporary. Getting caught halfway up with the effect expiring is a real risk.

Why It Matters So Much Early

Cold on the Great Plateau is a hard wall, not a nuisance. Without cold protection, entire sections of the starting area are closed to you, including a shrine.

The doublet removes that wall permanently, which is why the game gates it behind a small quest rather than handing it over.

Tips Most Players Miss

  • Spicy Peppers do double duty. They are both an ingredient and the workaround for the climb.
  • Cook, then talk. The dialogue option only appears once the dish is actually made.
  • Hyrule Bass comes from the ponds on the plateau, not from a shop.

The Great Plateau is a tutorial that hides several permanent upgrades in plain sight. Our guide to cooking covers the system this quest introduces, and our full Zelda guides cover the series.
