SEGA revealed on September 17, 2026 that Japan is one of the locations coming to Crazy Taxi: World Tour, announced during Tokyo Game Show. It is a fitting reveal for the venue, and it lands on a revival that is doing something the arcade original never did: going online.
The Details
SEGA describes the setting as “a place beautifully suspended between two worlds,” where “Japan’s historic neighborhoods and traditions sit alongside the bustling energy of the modern city.” Players will be able to “freely explore Japan’s exciting streets, get to know the locals, and pick up a souvenir or two,” which suggests a city built for wandering rather than purely for route optimization.
Japan is one of five cities in the game. The campaign follows Axel in what SEGA calls an all-new adventure, chasing down a mysterious organization causing chaos worldwide after his taxi is stolen. Alongside that story mode sits Arcade Mode, the traditional race against the clock to earn as much fare money as possible.
The structural change is multiplayer. SEGA’s announcement calls this the series’ first-ever online multiplayer mode, with multiple modes and cross-platform play. Crazy Taxi has been a solo score-chase for 26 years, so putting other real drivers in the same city is the biggest departure the revival has announced.
Development and publishing are both SEGA, and the game is confirmed for Xbox Series X and S, Xbox on PC, PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
What This Means for Players
Cross-platform multiplayer is the detail that decides whether this sticks. Arcade revivals live or die on whether there is anyone to play against six months in, and crossplay across five platforms is the strongest version of that bet SEGA could have made.
For now it is a 2027 game, so the platform rankings are the more immediate read: our best PS5 games of 2026, best Xbox games of 2026, and best Switch 2 games of 2026 cover what is worth playing on each of the systems it is headed to.
When and Where
Crazy Taxi: World Tour is coming in 2027 to Xbox Series X and S, Xbox on PC, PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. SEGA has not announced a specific date or price.
