Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion: Whether You Can Become a Werewolf

Oblivion Remastered official screenshot

You cannot become a werewolf in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. The remaster reproduces the 2006 game’s content, and that game never included lycanthropy, werewolf enemies or a werewolf quest, on any platform. This guide explains what the series does offer if you want to play a werewolf, what Bethesda has said about modding the remaster, why the vampire is Oblivion’s real monster path, and how the Daedric Prince of the Hunt still shows up in Cyrodiil.

Why there are no werewolves in Oblivion

Bethesda built Oblivion’s only transformation around vampirism. Werewolves appear in the lore books you can read in Cyrodiil, and Hircine, the Daedric Prince associated with them, has a shrine in the game, but the remaster’s Steam page describes the package as the 2006 Game of the Year with new visuals and refined gameplay plus the previously released add-ons, and none of those add-ons added lycanthropy. We read every official patch note since the April 2025 launch, including the Nintendo Switch 2 patches from August and September 2026, and none touches werewolves. As of the current build the answer is unchanged.

The two Elder Scrolls games with playable werewolves are Morrowind, through its Bloodmoon expansion, and Skyrim, where the Companions questline offers the Beast Form power. If lycanthropy is the point, those are the games to play, and our best Skyrim mods list covers ways to extend that experience.

What Bethesda says about mods

The 2025 version of this guide pointed readers at mods for the original 2006 game, and that advice does not carry over. Bethesda Support’s answer to “Does The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered support mods?” is that mods are not officially supported, and that players who hit problems should uninstall their mods and verify the game files on Steam or the Xbox app. There is no Creation Kit and no in-game Creations menu of the kind Skyrim and Fallout 4 have, and nothing of the sort is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2.

On PC, an unofficial modding scene exists all the same, centred on Nexus Mods. Per UESP’s remaster changes page, some plugins written for classic Oblivion can load in the remaster, but the game runs a modified version of the original Gamebryo engine for its gameplay logic underneath an Unreal Engine 5 rendering layer, so anything that depends on a script extender, new animations or a new creature model is a different project entirely. The werewolf mods that were popular for the 2006 game (Werewolf: The Awakening and Werewolf: Legends of the North among them) were built on that older toolchain, and we have found no confirmation that any of them works in the remaster. Community requests for a remaster-native werewolf mod were still open on the Nexus forums when we checked. If you go looking, treat any claim of a working lycanthropy mod as unverified until you have read its own compatibility notes, and keep a clean save from before you install it.

The transformation Oblivion actually has

If what you want is a night-loving predator with real power and real costs, Oblivion’s vampire delivers that, and it is fully supported on every platform. You catch it as a disease, Porphyric Hemophilia, from a vampire’s melee attack or as a reward from the Dark Brotherhood, wait three days without curing it, and sleep. Four stages of vampirism then trade rising bonuses to Strength, Speed, Willpower and seven skills against sun damage and weakness to fire, and you keep the stage you want by feeding on sleeping NPCs. The full method, the stage table and the feeding rules are in our guide to becoming a vampire, and the way back out is in how to cure vampirism.

A few of the werewolf fantasy’s specific beats have vampire equivalents. Stage 4 vampires gain Embrace of Shadows, three minutes of invisibility with Night Eye. Hunter’s Sight, available from stage 1, is Night Eye plus Detect Life, and can be cast repeatedly. Fear is covered by Reign of Terror, a touch-range Silence and Demoralize. What you do not get is a shape change or claw attacks, and no update since launch has added one.

Hircine’s shrine and the Saviour’s Hide

The closest Oblivion comes to lycanthropy is Hircine’s own Daedric quest. His shrine sits in the Great Forest south of the Imperial City, and once you are level 17 and have offered a wolf or bear pelt, the Prince of the Hunt sends you after the only unicorn in Cyrodiil in exchange for the Saviour’s Hide, a light cuirass with a Resist Magic enchantment. The unicorn lives in Harcane Grove, guarded by minotaurs, and per UESP it can even be ridden as a free mount, provided you never draw a weapon or raise your fists near it, because it attacks anything armed. Our Daedric artifacts guide walks through every shrine, the level requirement and the offering each one demands.

For players who want the beast-blooded roleplay without the mechanics, a Hand to Hand build wearing the Saviour’s Hide, sneaking at night and running the Dark Brotherhood questline gets surprisingly close. Everything else we have written for the game is on the Elder Scrolls hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there werewolves in Oblivion Remastered? No. Not as enemies, not as a disease and not as a quest reward. The remaster carries over the 2006 game’s content, which never included lycanthropy.

Did any patch add werewolves? No. We checked Update 1.1, Update 1.2 and both Nintendo Switch 2 patches. None of them adds new creatures or transformations.

Can I install a werewolf mod on PlayStation 5 or Xbox? No. Bethesda says mods are not officially supported for the remaster, and there is no console mod menu. Unofficial mods exist for the PC version only.

Which Elder Scrolls games let you become a werewolf? Morrowind, through the Bloodmoon expansion, and Skyrim, through the Companions questline.

Is Hircine in Oblivion? Yes. His shrine offers a Daedric quest that rewards the Saviour’s Hide, but it does not grant lycanthropy.
