30 Best Fallout 3 Mods (2026)

Official Fallout 3 artwork

The best Fallout 3 mods start with a short stack of fixes (the Fallout Anniversary Patcher, the Fallout Script Extender and the Updated Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch), then branch into texture packs, lighting, big gameplay overhauls and whole new questlines. Fallout 3 is nearly 18 years old and still one of the most modded games Bethesda ever shipped, and every one of the 30 mods below was checked against its creator’s page on September 21, 2026. All of them are free and PC only.

The one setup fact that matters most: in October 2021, Bethesda patched the Steam release to version 1.7.0.4, which removed the long-dead Games for Windows Live but also broke the Fallout Script Extender (FOSE) that most serious mods depend on. The fix is to run the Anniversary Patcher, which rolls Steam and Epic Games Store copies back to 1.7.0.3, the build the modding scene is built on. The GOG version never needed the downgrade. After that, install everything through a mod manager such as Mod Organizer 2 or Vortex. If you want the bigger picture of where this game sits in the series, our rundown of how many Fallout games there are covers the whole timeline.

Essentials and Fixes

Fallout Anniversary Patcher mod for Fallout 3 by lStewieAl and c6

1. Fallout Anniversary Patcher

This is the first thing to install on any modern copy of Fallout 3. Per its page, it downgrades the October 2021 update (1.7.0.4) to 1.7.0.3 so FOSE works, stops the game loading Games for Windows Live’s xlive.dll, makes the executable 4GB aware, fixes a file handle and mod limit bug, and loads FOSE automatically when you launch Fallout3.exe. Version 1.1 also fixed a crash on Intel graphics. It supports the Steam, GOG and Epic versions, GOTY or not. Creator: lStewieAl and c6. Download: Fallout Anniversary Patcher on Nexus Mods.

Fallout Script Extender (FOSE) mod for Fallout 3 by Ian Patterson, Stephen Abel and Paul Connelly

2. Fallout Script Extender (FOSE)

FOSE expands what Fallout 3’s scripting language can do, and a large share of the mods on this list will not run without it. It works without permanently modifying Fallout3.exe, and you can confirm it is running by typing GetFOSEVersion in the console. Current mods like Command Extender and lStewieAl’s Tweaks ask specifically for FOSE 1.3 beta 2, so grab the latest build from this page rather than an old copy. Creator: Ian Patterson, Stephen Abel and Paul Connelly. Needs: Game version 1.7.0.3 (see the Anniversary Patcher). Download: Fallout Script Extender on Nexus Mods.

Command Extender mod for Fallout 3 by lStewieAl

3. Command Extender

Command Extender is a FOSE plugin that ports engine fixes and scripting functions from New Vegas’s JIP LN plugin. Per its page, gaining XP above level 99 no longer crashes the game, dead actors stop T-posing on load, and the console works properly with a controller connected, which is handy if you followed our guide to connecting an Xbox controller to a PC. It is still being updated in 2026. Creator: lStewieAl. Needs: FOSE 1.3 beta 2, game version 1.7.0.3. Download: Command Extender on Nexus Mods.

Updated Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch mod for Fallout 3 by Hairylegs222

4. Updated Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch

The most endorsed Fallout 3 mod on Nexus, and still actively maintained, with an update in August 2026. It is an entirely remade patch (its page puts it at around 58,000 records) that fixes bugs across the base game and all five DLCs, and restores cut content only where it blends in cleanly. Its author says fixes from the Tale of Two Wastelands team were backported into it. Its page is blunt about conflicts, so check other big mods against it in FO3Edit. Creator: Hairylegs222. Needs: All five DLCs, FOSE 1.3 beta 2, Command Extender, the Anniversary Patcher and the other small plugins listed on its page. Download: Updated Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch on Nexus Mods.

Unofficial Fallout 3 ESM Patcher mod for Fallout 3 by hairylegs222

5. Unofficial Fallout 3 ESM Patcher

A companion tool from the same author that patches the game’s own ESM files directly, which lets it make fixes an ordinary override plugin cannot. Per its page, it makes actors update more often (fixing dead bodies that fail to appear), decompresses NPC and landscape records to cut CPU load and loading times, and repairs broken navmesh. The Updated Unofficial Patch is designed around it, so install this first. Back up your ESM files before running it. Creator: hairylegs222. Needs: English Fallout 3 with DLCs, version 1.7.0.3 or higher. Download: Unofficial Fallout 3 ESM Patcher on Nexus Mods.

F3TF: Fallout 3 Tick Fix mod for Fallout 3 by lStewieAl and carxt

6. F3TF: Fallout 3 Tick Fix

The old answer to Fallout 3’s micro stutter was Fallout Stutter Remover, last updated in 2014. F3TF is its modern replacement: a stripped-down FOSE plugin that fixes the tick count bug behind the stutter (which its page says is worse on better hardware) and adds Fast Exit, so the game closes instantly. Its page says FOSR was broken by later Windows updates and must be removed if you use this. Creator: lStewieAl and carxt. Needs: FOSE. Download: F3TF on Nexus Mods.

lStewieAl's Tweaks mod for Fallout 3 by lStewieAl

7. lStewieAl’s Tweaks

An esp-less bundle of optional engine tweaks, every one off by default and switched on in an INI file. Highlights include faster sleep and wait, deselecting quests, a compass height indicator, lockpicks that remember the bobby pin angle, and custom controller deadzones. Its page says it is safe to install, update or remove mid-playthrough, so there is little risk in trying it. Creator: lStewieAl. Needs: FOSE 1.3 beta 2. Download: lStewieAl’s Tweaks on Nexus Mods.

Visuals and Atmosphere

NMC's Texture Pack for FO3 mod for Fallout 3 by NeilMc_NMC

8. NMC’s Texture Pack for FO3

NeilMc_NMC’s global texture pack replaces terrain, trees, roads, interiors, vehicles and most furniture with high resolution textures built from real photographs, at 200 to 400 percent of the original resolution. It comes in four sizes, so lower-end machines can still use it. Per its page it covers the base game only, so DLC areas keep their original textures. Creator: NeilMc_NMC. Download: NMC’s Texture Pack on Nexus Mods.

Fallout 3 Redesigned mod for Fallout 3 by Dracomies

9. Fallout 3 Redesigned

Formerly known as Project Beauty, this is the standard face overhaul for Fallout 3’s NPCs. It rebuilds each character’s facial structure and skin tone to look more natural and better match their personality. The HD Edition adds high resolution skin textures, eyelashes and a few new hairstyles; the Standard Edition changes faces only. Its author made it open source in 2023, and compatibility patches are listed on the page. Creator: Dracomies. Download: Fallout 3 Redesigned on Nexus Mods.

Fellout mod for Fallout 3 by Hattix

10. Fellout

Fellout exists to kill the green tint. It reworks weather and lighting indoors and out, removes the green fog, and changes the water, aiming for a harsh Mad Max look. Its author’s stated goal is that it should feel like how the game should have looked rather than like a mod. It pairs with Enhanced Weather for rain and with Fallout Street Lights for darker nights. Creator: Hattix. Download: Fellout on Nexus Mods.

FO3 Flora Overhaul mod for Fallout 3 by vurt

11. FO3 Flora Overhaul

This mod replaces Fallout 3’s trees and ground cover. There are four versions: Forested for a lush, colorful landscape, Dead for lore-friendly dead trees with a heavier forest feel, Total Devastation for towering dead pines inspired by The Road, and a Lite option. Per its page, the bleaker versions look best with muted, dark weather rather than blue skies. Creator: vurt. Download: FO3 Flora Overhaul on Nexus Mods.

Enhanced Weather: Rain and Snow mod for Fallout 3 by Skingrad24

12. Enhanced Weather: Rain and Snow

Fallout 3 shipped without rain, and this mod adds it, along with snow. An optional plugin makes the rain radioactive, and the page explains how to remove that plugin safely (wait for the rain to stop and cure your radiation before saving). Its author notes rain passes through buildings, an engine limit shared with Oblivion. It was last updated in 2010. Creator: Skingrad24. Download: Enhanced Weather on Nexus Mods.

Fallout Street Lights mod for Fallout 3 by SpeedyB64 and RW2112

13. Fallout Street Lights

This adds working lights and light beams to most street lights and signs in the D.C. ruins, including animated flickering ones, plus glow maps on details like metro escalators. It is built to pair with Fellout’s darker nights, and the page lists INI light distance settings that make it look better at some performance cost. It was updated to version 2.0 in 2024. Creator: SpeedyB64 and RW2112. Download: Fallout Street Lights on Nexus Mods.

EVE: Energy Visuals Enhanced mod for Fallout 3 by weijiesen and Cipscis

14. EVE: Energy Visuals Enhanced

EVE makes energy weapons worth using. It adds 32 new animated critical kill deaths for laser, plasma and other energy weapons, plus new muzzle flashes, projectiles and impact effects. Its author has made it open source. Expect the disintegrations to be graphic. Mature content. Creator: weijiesen and Cipscis. Download: EVE on Nexus Mods.

Gameplay Overhauls

FWE: Fallout 3 Wanderers Edition mod for Fallout 3 by FWE Team

15. FWE: Fallout 3 Wanderers Edition

FWE is the classic Fallout 3 overhaul, merging more than 50 smaller mods with new features to make the game harder, more immersive and more role-play driven. It reworks balance across the board. Its last release was 6.03 in 2010, and the page is firm that you must install Part 1, Part 2 and the hotfix. FWE and FOOK2 are separate overhauls, so check the Fallout Interoperability Program before combining them. Creator: FWE Team. Needs: FOSE (CRAFT and CALIBR are included in the download). Download: FWE on Nexus Mods.

Mart's Mutant Mod mod for Fallout 3 by Martigen

16. Mart’s Mutant Mod

Mart’s Mutant Mod adds a huge range of variety to the creatures and NPCs of the Wasteland, plus new and unique creatures and NPCs to run into. It is the usual partner for FWE, and its page points to compatibility patches for FWE, FOOK2 and others. The current release, RC 6.2, dates from 2012. Creator: Martigen. Download: Mart’s Mutant Mod on Nexus Mods.

Blackened mod for Fallout 3 by BlackRampage, Martigen and BenWah

17. Blackened

If you run several of the big overhauls together, Blackened is the glue. It is a set of compatibility patches for combinations of FWE, Mart’s Mutant Mod, EVE and Project Beauty (now Fallout 3 Redesigned), so those mods stop overwriting each other. Pick the patch that matches exactly the overhauls you have installed. Creator: BlackRampage, Martigen and BenWah. Needs: The overhauls its chosen patch covers. Download: Blackened on Nexus Mods.

Weapon Mod Kits mod for Fallout 3 by Antistar

18. Weapon Mod Kits

Weapon Mod Kits scatters modification kits across the Wasteland so you can fit silencers, extended magazines, auto-fire mechanisms, laser sights and scopes to your guns, a system New Vegas later made standard. Its page recommends checking the Fallout Interoperability Program for patches if you also use FWE. Creator: Antistar. Download: Weapon Mod Kits on Nexus Mods.

RH_IronSights mod for Fallout 3 by The Merry Rogue

19. RH_IronSights

The base game zooms in without really aiming down the sights. RH_IronSights adds centered iron sight models and animations for most vanilla guns. After years away, its author returned in 2025, and version 1.0.1 in June 2026 folded the old patch, including the reticle remover fix, into the main file. Creator: The Merry Rogue. Download: RH_IronSights on Nexus Mods.

Sprint Mod mod for Fallout 3 by Lork

20. Sprint Mod

A simple, long-loved addition: a sprint button that burns action points. With FOSE, holding the run key turns into a sprint, or you can set a custom key in the mod’s pedometer menu. Without FOSE, you bind a sprint hotkey in your inventory instead. It also adds breathing sounds. Creator: Lork. Needs: FOSE for some features. Download: Sprint Mod on Nexus Mods.

FOOK2 mod for Fallout 3 by FOOK Team

21. FOOK2

FOOK2, the Fallout Overhaul Kit, is the other big overhaul route. It adds hundreds of new items, high quality retextures and new gameplay features, rebalanced and integrated with all the DLC. The current release is a 2021 open beta. Its page says FOSE and DarNified UI are needed for some features, and the DLC Improvement Kit needs all five DLCs. Creator: FOOK Team. Needs: FOSE recommended. Download: FOOK2 on Nexus Mods.

Quests, Companions and New Places

Tale of Two Wastelands mod for Fallout 3 by The TTW Team

22. Tale of Two Wastelands

Tale of Two Wastelands (TTW) is technically a New Vegas mod, but it belongs on any Fallout 3 list. It is a total conversion that merges Fallout 3 and its DLC into Fallout: New Vegas, so you can play both in one save and travel between the Capital Wasteland and the Mojave. You need both games with all their DLC, in English, and the team’s installer does the conversion. Version 3.4.0 arrived in June 2026. Creator: The TTW Team. Needs: Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas with all DLC. Download: Tale of Two Wastelands on the TTW site.

The D.C. Interiors Project mod for Fallout 3 by chuckSteel

23. The D.C. Interiors Project

Most of downtown D.C. is boarded up. This mod opens it, adding explorable interiors to many buildings across districts such as Georgetown and the Mason District: shops, a police precinct, a pharmacy, diners and more. It was last updated in 2019. Creator: chuckSteel. Download: The D.C. Interiors Project on Nexus Mods.

Alton, IL mod for Fallout 3 by ElijahHouck

24. Alton, IL

Alton, IL is a huge new worldspace and questline where you have to survive the Alton wastes and find your way home. Its author calls the 2.0 patch its final update, and the page links a community revoicing project for characters whose original voice acting drew complaints. There is also a Tale of Two Wastelands conversion. Creator: ElijahHouck. Download: Alton, IL on Nexus Mods.

A World of Pain mod for Fallout 3 by djmystro

25. A World of Pain

A World of Pain adds a long list of large, heavily cluttered interiors built like enemy strongholds, along with new enemies, several main quests, new companions, items, notes, traps and tricks. It is built entirely from vanilla assets, so the download is small. Its page notes it gets even more crowded with Mart’s Mutant Mod. Creator: djmystro. Download: A World of Pain on Nexus Mods.

Mothership Zeta Crew mod for Fallout 3 by Nylonathathep

26. Mothership Zeta Crew

Mothership Zeta Crew picks up after the Mothership Zeta DLC and puts a whole new faction under your command, with its own story arc, missions, areas, weapons and characters. It is one of the most ambitious story expansions ever made for the game. Creator: Nylonathathep. Needs: All official Fallout 3 DLC. Download: Mothership Zeta Crew on Nexus Mods.

Ties That Bind mod for Fallout 3 by TheFourWings

27. Ties That Bind

Ties That Bind gives the Lone Wanderer a sister, Amanda, who travels with you as a narrative companion. Per its page she has more than 700 lines of professionally written and voiced dialogue, reacting to the main story in ways your silent character cannot. Its author says it was inspired by Liam Neeson’s performance as your father. Creator: TheFourWings. Download: Ties That Bind on Nexus Mods.

Interface and Quality of Life

Immersive HUD (iHUD) mod for Fallout 3 by Gopher

28. Immersive HUD (iHUD)

Immersive HUD hides permanently visible HUD elements such as health, AP and the compass when you do not need them, and brings them back on a key press when you do. It gives you a clean screen for exploring without losing information in a fight. Its author recommends pairing it with Adjustable HUD. Creator: Gopher. Download: Immersive HUD on Nexus Mods.

Fallout 3: Enhanced Camera mod for Fallout 3 by LogicDragon

29. Fallout 3: Enhanced Camera

Enhanced Camera shows your own body and shadow in first person, and keeps you in first person at moments where the game normally forces third person, such as sitting down, getting up, knockdowns and death. Its page lists a few quirks, like odd foot movement with melee attacks when head bob is disabled. Creator: LogicDragon. Needs: Game version 1.7.0.3 and FOSE. Download: Enhanced Camera on Nexus Mods.

Fallout 3 gameplay

30. Color Hi-Detailed Map and Icons

A small mod that makes the Pip-Boy world map far more useful. It draws every house and road on the map and color codes the icons: red for dangerous places, blue for metro stations, yellow for settlements, white for pre-war structures, green for sewers and gray for undiscovered spots. It is a texture replacement, so it needs archive invalidation, which a mod manager handles for you. Creator: MAXHARDMAN. Download: Color Hi-Detailed Map and Icons on Nexus Mods.

How We Chose These Mods

Every mod here was checked on its creator’s page on September 21, 2026, for availability, requirements and the game version it targets. We favored mods with long track records and heavy endorsement counts on Nexus Mods, then balanced the list so it covers fixes, visuals, gameplay, content and interface. Many classics from 2009 to 2014 were built for the same 1.7.0.3 version the Anniversary Patcher restores, so age alone did not rule anything out. We left out adult mods, and outdated tools such as the old Games for Windows Live Disabler that the Anniversary Patcher now replaces.

Download only from the creator pages linked above. Re-upload sites are a common source of outdated or tampered files. Nexus Mods needs a free account to download. If you like lists like this, we have also ranked the best Sims 4 mods and the best Valheim mods.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should you install first? Run the Fallout Anniversary Patcher, then install FOSE, Command Extender, the Unofficial Fallout 3 ESM Patcher and the Updated Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch, in that order. Launch the game once before modding so it creates its INI files.

Do Fallout 3 mods work on the Steam version? Yes, once you run the Anniversary Patcher. Steam’s 2021 update (1.7.0.4) removed Games for Windows Live but broke FOSE, and the patcher downgrades the game to 1.7.0.3 so script-based mods work again. GOG copies do not need the downgrade.

Is Fallout Stutter Remover still needed? No. F3TF’s page says Fallout Stutter Remover was broken by later Windows updates, and F3TF fixes the same micro stutter in a lighter plugin. Remove FSR before installing it.

Can you mod Fallout 3 on Xbox or PlayStation? No. Fallout 3 mods are a PC feature. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions never had mod support.

Are these mods free? Yes. Every mod on this list is a free download from its creator’s page.
