Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave: Permadeath and Casual Mode

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave offers two difficulties, Normal and Hard, and two modes, Classic and Casual, chosen at the start. In Classic, a fallen unit is gone for the rest of the run. In Casual, a fallen unit only retreats for the remainder of that map and is deployable again afterwards.

Lowering Difficulty Is Easy. Raising It Is Not.

This asymmetry catches people out.

To lower difficulty, visit the Shrine of Causality in the Obelisk Chamber. You can do this at any time.

To raise it, the Shrine will not help. You need the Descend Again option from the title screen, which replays the Prologue while preserving your other progress.

So if you are hesitating between Normal and Hard at the start, starting on Hard is the lower-risk choice: dropping down later takes a menu, while climbing up takes a Prologue replay.

Permadeath Is Softer Than It Sounds

Classic mode in this game sits alongside the rewind mechanic, and that changes the calculus considerably. Fortuna’s Blessing lets you turn back time to an earlier point in a battle, which means most deaths are recoverable if you notice them.

In practice, Classic here is less about losing units permanently and more about the tension of nearly losing them. Our rewind guide covers how many rewinds you get and what limits them, which is the real constraint on Classic play.

One claim worth correcting: some sites state that Classic mode “turns into full permadeath” starting in later acts, implying it is softened early. That is not accurate. Classic is permadeath throughout.

Can You Switch Modes Mid-Run?

This one is genuinely unsettled. The Shrine of Causality documents difficulty changes, and at least one reviewer described the game as offering the option to switch between permadeath and casual modes, which reads as switchable. But no source we trust states plainly that Classic and Casual can be swapped after you begin.

Until that is confirmed, choose deliberately at the start rather than assuming you can change your mind.

Which Should You Pick?

If you are new to Fire Emblem, Casual on Normal removes the two things that make the series intimidating at once, and the tactics remain intact.

If you are experienced, Classic on Hard is the intended tension, and the rewind means a misread turn is a scare rather than a lost save. Our difficulty guide covers how Hard actually plays.
