GTA 5: Best Heist Crew for Each Heist

GTA 5 official screenshot

Crew selection in GTA 5 decides more of your heist take than the approach does, and the rule people follow, hire the cheapest, is wrong roughly half the time. A weak gunman or driver can lose you far more of the score than their smaller cut saves.

How Crew Cuts Work

Each crew slot offers several candidates, and each asks for a percentage of the final take. Cheaper specialists are less skilled.

The thing that makes this interesting: crew who survive a heist gain experience and come back more skilled, while still asking for the same percentage. That is the mechanic the whole strategy hangs on.

The Counterintuitive Play

Hire a cheap, low-skill specialist on an early heist where their incompetence costs you little, let them survive, and they come back experienced at the same cheap rate for The Big Score, where the money actually is.

That is why the optimal crew for the Jewel Store Job is not the best crew available. You are training staff at a discount for the finale.

The corollary matters too: if a crew member dies, they gain nothing and are gone. Getting your cheap trainee killed wastes the whole plan.

Where Skill Actually Matters

Not every slot is equally sensitive.

  • Gunmen matter most. A weak gunman drops part of the take outright on several heists.
  • Drivers matter on the escape-heavy jobs, where a slow getaway costs you.
  • Hackers matter where a timer governs how much you can grab. More time on the clock is more money, directly.

If you are only going to pay up for one slot on The Big Score, the hacker and the gunmen are where the money is.

The Approach Is a Preference, Not a Trap

Each heist offers roughly a quiet route and a loud one. Neither is a wrong answer. They change the preparation missions and how the job plays, and players split fairly evenly on which they prefer.

Our guide on how to do a heist covers the five heists and the approaches each offers.

Do the Assassinations Afterwards

The single largest financial decision around heists is not the crew at all. It is holding Lester’s optional assassination missions until after The Big Score, so you are investing heist money rather than small change. Our guide on how to beat the stock market covers the sequence, and best stocks to buy covers the two exchanges.

A Note on Payout Tables

Detailed crew and payout tables circulate on community sites and come from player testing rather than Rockstar. They are reliable on which crew members are better and much less so on exact figures.
