GTA 5: How to Increase Driving Skill

There are two things in GTA 5 that people mean by “driving skill”, and they work differently. The driving stat on your character sheet rises through wheelies and airtime, while Franklin’s Driving Focus special ability charges through aggressive driving. Confusing the two is why players report hours of ordinary driving moving nothing.

Raising the Driving Stat

The stat responds to stunt behaviour rather than time spent behind the wheel. Community testing puts the rates at roughly one percent per ten seconds of sustained wheelie, and one percent per second of airtime in a vehicle, with a bonus for landing on all four wheels.

That makes stunt jumps with clean four-wheel landings by far the fastest method. These figures come from player testing rather than Rockstar documentation, so treat them as a guide to the relative value of each activity rather than exact numbers.

The practical approach is to find a stunt ramp you like and run it repeatedly. Wheelies on a motorcycle work too, and are easier to sustain, just slower per attempt.

Charging Franklin’s Special Ability

Driving Focus slows time while Franklin is driving any land vehicle, which makes corners and tight manoeuvres far easier. The bar fills through risk rather than stunts:

  • Drifting through corners, which adds continuously while you hold the drift.
  • Near misses with other vehicles at speed.
  • Driving against traffic on the wrong side of the road.
  • Holding at or above roughly 90 percent of the vehicle’s top speed.

Ordinary careful driving does fill it, but very slowly. The ability rewards driving badly on purpose.

Why the Stat Is Worth Raising

A higher driving stat improves handling and traction across vehicles, and it reduces how easily you lose control. It matters most in mission chases and in anything timed.

It also feeds completion. If you are working toward that, our guides on doing a heist and buying property cover the other two big completion strands.

Doing It Efficiently

Because the stat responds to airtime, the most efficient session is a stunt jump you can reach quickly and repeat without a long drive back. Pick one with a short reset loop rather than the most spectacular one on the map.

If your vehicle keeps getting wrecked in the process, our guide on how to customize a car covers the performance upgrades that make the attempts more survivable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does normal driving raise the stat? Barely. Wheelies and airtime are what move it.

Is Franklin’s special ability the same as the driving stat? No. They are separate systems with separate requirements.

What is the fastest way to max the stat? Repeated stunt jumps with four-wheel landings.

Does the stat apply to all three characters? Each character has their own driving stat, raised the same way.
