No online multiplayer has been announced for Grand Theft Auto VI at launch. PlayStation’s official GTA VI FAQ answers the multiplayer question with one line: “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience”, and both console stores list the game as single-player.
That doesn’t rule out an online mode later, but nothing about one has been announced by Rockstar. Here is what is confirmed.
What Rockstar and the Stores Say
- PlayStation’s FAQ: asked “Does GTA VI have any multiplayer modes or features?”, it answers: “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.” (Source: PlayStation’s GTA VI offer terms and FAQ.)
- Rockstar: its pre-order announcement described the game the same way, as a single-player experience.
- PlayStation Store: lists “1 player” and “Offline play enabled”.
- Microsoft Store: lists “Single player”.
So at launch, GTA 6 is a story game for one player.
The GTA+ Bonus Is for GTA Online, Not GTA 6
This confuses a lot of people. Digital pre-orders of GTA 6 include a free month of GTA+, Rockstar’s membership. But the benefits Rockstar lists all apply to GTA Online, the online mode of GTA 5:
- A GTA$500,000 deposit into your GTA Online character each month.
- 15% bonus GTA$ on Shark Card purchases.
- Free and discounted GTA Online vehicles.
- Access to the GTA+ Games Library.

What About GTA Online?
GTA Online is still getting new content. Take-Two’s latest earnings release and its prepared remarks mention updates such as the Kortz Center Heist in July, and neither says anything about a GTA 6 online mode. You may see claims online that a GTA 6 online mode is coming on a specific date. None of those come from Rockstar or Take-Two, so treat them as rumors until Rockstar says otherwise.
Do You Need PS Plus or Game Pass to Play?
Because the game is single-player, you don’t need a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass subscription to play it. You do need an internet connection and a platform account to download it, since every copy is a download (even boxed ones, which hold a code). - Playing with friends: there’s nothing to play together at launch, and no crossplay to worry about.
- Choosing a platform: since there’s no multiplayer, pick whichever console you and your friends prefer without worrying about matchmaking.
