GTA San Andreas: How to Increase Swimming Skill

Official art for Grand Theft Auto San Andreas The Definitive Edition

Lung capacity in GTA San Andreas only goes up while CJ is underwater. Every 60 seconds spent submerged raises it by 50 points, which is five percent, and nothing else in the game moves the stat. Swimming on the surface does not count, and neither does any amount of running or cycling.

Why This Stat Matters

This is not a cosmetic stat. The mission Amphibious Assault is locked until your lung capacity is above five percent. Players who reach that point in the story and find the mission refusing to start have usually never gone underwater at all.

Beyond the mission gate, a higher capacity means longer dives, which matters for collectibles and for a handful of approaches to later missions.

The Fastest Method

The efficient version of this uses geography rather than endurance. Find somewhere you can swim deep while staying close to shore:

  1. Dive straight down and hold it until roughly half your breath bar is gone.
  2. Keep going until you are nearly out of air.
  3. Surface and get out of the water immediately. Being close to shore is what makes this fast, because your breath refills much quicker out of the water than in it.
  4. Go straight back down and repeat.

Ten to fifteen minutes of this cycle is generally enough to reach maximum. The saving comes entirely from the short trip back to land, which is why picking the right spot matters more than anything else in the method.

Oysters Do the Job Too

There are 50 oysters hidden underwater across San Andreas. Collecting them requires exactly the kind of sustained diving that raises the stat, so hunting them tends to max your lung capacity as a side effect.

They also raise sex appeal, which makes the oyster hunt genuinely efficient if you were going to do it anyway. Our guide on how to increase sex appeal covers what else feeds that stat.

The Cheat That Does Not Help

There is a cheat that lets CJ stay underwater indefinitely. It is worth being clear about what it does and does not do: it removes the breath limit, but it does not raise the underlying lung capacity stat. Turn it off and you are exactly where you started, and Amphibious Assault stays locked.

If you are working through CJ’s other stats, our guides on losing muscle and making money cover the ones with the widest knock-on effects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does swimming on the surface raise lung capacity? No. Only time spent underwater counts.

How long does maxing it take? Roughly ten to fifteen minutes using the dive-and-surface cycle near shore.

What is the minimum needed for Amphibious Assault? Above five percent, which is one minute of underwater time.

Do oysters raise anything else? Yes, they raise sex appeal alongside the diving benefit.
