Kingdom Hearts: How to Open the Chest in Traverse Town

No chest in Traverse Town is locked: any chest you can stand next to opens with Triangle in the HD version (Y on an Xbox-layout pad), or with the Open command in the original PS2 release. The chests that give people trouble are the ones you cannot reach yet, because they sit behind a Trinity mark you have not learned or on a ledge that needs High Jump or Glide.

Below we cover how chest opening works in each version, then go through the chests players ask about most, where each one is, and what unlocks it.

Which Version This Guide Covers

This guide covers Kingdom Hearts Final Mix as it appears in KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-, the current way to play on PS4 (playable on PS5), Xbox One, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The Nintendo Switch cloud version was pulled from sale on June 9, 2026, per Square Enix, and stays playable for existing owners until June 9, 2027. On October 8, 2026, Square Enix releases the Kingdom Hearts Collection I~III, which includes these same games running natively on Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through the Microsoft Store, and Switch cloud owners can transfer their saves to the Switch 2 version. Traverse Town’s layout and its Trinity marks are the same in the original 2002 PS2 game.

The one practical difference is the button. In the HD Final Mix, the contextual action (Open, Talk, Examine) is a prompt you trigger with Triangle. In the original PS2 release, the bottom slot of the command menu changes to Open when you are next to a chest, and you select it like any other command. If you walk up to a chest and nothing appears, you are not close enough or not facing it.

Why Most Traverse Town Chests Are Out of Reach at First

Traverse Town hides a lot of its treasure behind abilities you only get later. Per the community wiki, the three Trinity marks that gate most of these chests unlock in this order:

  • Red Trinity (Trinity Charge, breaks barriers): after sealing the Keyhole in Deep Jungle.
  • Green Trinity (Trinity Ladder, reaches high places): after sealing the Keyhole in Agrabah.
  • White Trinity (Trinity Detect, summons a hidden chest): after defeating Riku in Hollow Bastion’s Entrance Hall.

Movement matters too. High Jump comes from a chest in Monstro, and Glide comes after sealing Neverland’s Keyhole. If a chest looks impossible, it is almost always waiting on one of these five things. Stand on a Trinity mark with Donald and Goofy in your party and the Trinity command appears.

The Chests Players Ask About Most

The chest on the cabinet in the Accessory Shop. This one is reachable from the very first visit. It sits on top of a cabinet near the door. Jump onto the cabinet and open it for a Mythril Shard.

The chest behind the wooden planks in the First District. At the end of the short alley behind the Item Shop, where Sora first wakes up, the passage is blocked by planks with a Red Trinity mark in front. Use the Red Trinity to smash through. The chest behind it holds Dalmatians 4, 5 and 6.

The chests in the Secret Waterway. The Secret Waterway is sealed off by bars in the Second District Alleyway. Use the Red Trinity on the grate at the end of the alley near the Dalmatians’ House to get in. Per the community wiki’s walkthrough, a White Trinity inside summons a chest with an Orichalcum, and another chest inside the arch holds Dalmatians 10, 11 and 12.

The chests in the Item Workshop. The Moogles’ workshop above the Accessory Shop is reached with the Green Trinity on the shop floor. Inside, two chests hold Dalmatians 7, 8 and 9 and a Mythril Shard.

The rooftop chests. Several chests sit on roofs and awnings across the First and Second Districts. Player guides describe one reached by jumping to the top of the Item Workshop and gliding across to the far end, one on an awning in the Second District, and one on a rooftop near the Third District exit. These need High Jump, Glide, or both.

The chest behind the Magician’s Study. Around the back of the Mystical House in the Third District’s hidden area, a chest the wiki lists as holding Dalmatians 1, 2 and 3 is only reachable by gliding.

The chest in Geppetto’s House. Once Geppetto and Pinocchio settle in Traverse Town later in the story, a chest inside holds the Wishing Star Keyblade.

A Quick Checklist for a Chest You Cannot Open

  1. Can you touch it? If yes, face it and press Triangle (HD) or pick Open from the command menu (PS2).
  2. Is there a colored mark on the ground nearby? That is a Trinity mark. Check which color, and whether you have sealed the world that teaches it.
  3. Is it on a ledge or roof? Come back with High Jump or Glide.
  4. Is it inside a room you have never entered? Some rooms, like the Item Workshop and Geppetto’s House, only open later in the story.
  5. Are Donald and Goofy both in the party? Trinity marks need all three of you.

Chests also count toward Jiminy’s Journal, and the 99 Dalmatian puppies scattered in them pay out rewards when you return them to Pongo and Perdita in the Second District. For a sense of how long the whole game takes, see our guide to how long Kingdom Hearts takes to beat.

Traverse Town ties into a few of our other guides. The Item Workshop above the Accessory Shop is where you build the Ultima Weapon, and the Dalmatians hunt continues in Wonderland with the Tea Party Garden chests. Frequently Asked Questions

What button opens chests in Kingdom Hearts? In the HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX version, walk up to the chest and press Triangle on PlayStation (Y on an Xbox-layout pad). In the original PS2 release, select the Open command that replaces the bottom slot of the command menu.

Are there locked chests in Traverse Town? No. Every chest opens once you can reach it. The “locked” ones are really behind Trinity marks or on ledges that need High Jump or Glide.

When do you get the Red Trinity? After sealing the Keyhole in Deep Jungle, per the community wiki. It opens the planks in the First District alley and the grate into the Secret Waterway.

How do you get into the Item Workshop? Use the Green Trinity on the floor of the Accessory Shop. You learn it after sealing the Keyhole in Agrabah.

Why does the Trinity command not appear? Trinity marks need Donald and Goofy both in your party, and you must have already learned that color of Trinity.
