The Legend of California’s Alpha 5 Adds a Doomsday Bunker

The Legend of California‘s Alpha 5 starts on Thursday, November 12, at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) and ends on Wednesday, November 18, at the same time, developer Kintsugiyama said on November 7. It is the game’s longest playtest so far, and it adds new endgame content called the Doomsday Bunker.

The Details

Kintsugiyama’s Steam post lists what is new, with full patch notes still to come:

  • Doomsday Bunker. Collect Intel from Legión Sangre Invasions to find where the bunker is. The studio calls it the most difficult content in the game, and the most rewarding.
  • New horse traits. Whistle while you are downed and a Medic horse comes to revive you. A Warhorse speeds up after trampling an enemy, and a Gatherer picks plants as you ride past.
  • Two new Strongholds. Apex Oil Works and Depot join the map, along with an overhauled Modoc and updated rivers across the island.
  • Furniture with a purpose. You can sit in chairs and mount fish, weapons, and animal heads on your walls. Comfort now raises your max health and your chances at extra gold and loot.

If you want to see the bunker before you play it, Jeff Kaplan and Tim Ford will run it live with Geoff Goodman and Matt Goss on Wednesday, November 11, at 10:30 AM PT (1:30 PM ET), on Twitch and YouTube.

What This Means for Players

This is still an invite test, not a launch. If you played in an earlier alpha, you are in automatically when the servers go live, and Kintsugiyama is inviting more new players from its Steam signup list. Everyone else can sign up for future playtests on the game’s Steam page, which lists no release date. The studio’s site says the game is four years in the making, with a ways still to go.

The game is a first-person action-survival shooter set on a mythical Island of California in the gold rush era, playable alone or with friends. Kaplan is best known as the former game director of Overwatch, which has its own guide hub here.

The horse changes stand out if you have spent time with other frontier games. In Red Dead Redemption 2, you revive your horse. Here, a trait lets a horse come and revive you, which could save a solo run as easily as a group one. If you want frontier co-op in the meantime, our Red Dead Online friends guide covers it. Comfort stats that raise max health also make base building worth more than looks, an idea survival fans will know from games like Enshrouded.
