Lightyear Frontier: Can You Move Buildings? Answered

Yes, you can move buildings in Lightyear Frontier. Since the Making it Home update of June 2024, Recycling Mode includes a relocate option, so you can lift a placed Construct or hologram and set it down somewhere else without tearing it down and rebuilding it. Fences are the main exception, and a few buildings have to be emptied first.

Lightyear Frontier launched 1.0 on November 4, 2026, and moving things is easier than it was in early Early Access, when recycling and rebuilding was the only way. Below: the controls, what can and cannot move, why a building sometimes refuses, and how to shift a whole base.

How to Move a Building

FRAME BREAK added the feature in the Making it Home update as the “ability to relocate existing constructs and holograms, accessible via the recycling mode.” To use it:

  1. Walk up to the building as the Exofarmer and open Build Mode.
  2. Switch to Recycling Mode.
  3. Aim at the Construct you want to move and choose the relocate action instead of recycling it. The on-screen prompts show the button for each step.
  4. Move the building to its new spot, rotate it if needed, and confirm the placement.

The same prompts work on controller. FRAME BREAK made the Recycling Mode input rebindable in October 2024, so the buttons depend on your settings.

Relocated storage keeps its contents. A moved building still has to pass the normal placement checks: since a January 2025 fix, relocating respects warnings such as “Invalid Slope” and “Blocked.” The 1.0 patch notes fixed more relocation bugs: relocating some constructs no longer loses their contents, neighbor homes keep their color after relocation, and signs keep their text.

What You Can and Cannot Move

Thing Can you move it? Notes
Most Constructs and decorations Yes Through Recycling Mode
Holograms (unbuilt plans) Yes Handy for adjusting a layout before you build
Storage Yes, even when full No need to empty it since the Shifting Gears update
Crafting constructs Yes, when empty FRAME BREAK’s patch notes treat these as movable once empty
Farm Center Yes Joining players in multiplayer can move it too
Neighbor homes and outposts Yes, as one piece The whole outpost moves together
Fences No Made non-relocatable in the Automation Update; recycle and rebuild them
A Construct with another built on top Not until the top piece is moved The game blocks it with a warning sound

Storage is the big quality of life change. The Shifting Gears update of June 2025 made it so “storage constructs can now be relocated without having to empty them first,” which used to be the most tedious part of rearranging a farm.

Moving vs Recycling

Sometimes recycling is the better choice, for example when you want a building gone or you are replacing fences. Recycling is free:

  • You get everything back. Recycling returns the resources a building cost.
  • Straight to your inventory. Since Shifting Gears, recycled items go directly into the mech’s inventory, and recycling a painted Construct gives back the paint.
  • Fast demolition. Since the Automation Update, holding the Recycle key rapidly recycles whatever you aim at, and you can click and drag to keep removing Constructs.

The rule of thumb: relocate anything with contents or a complex setup, and recycle fences or anything you no longer need.

Why a Building Will Not Move

If the relocate prompt is missing or the move fails, check these in order:

  • It is not empty. Crafting constructs need to be emptied first, and that includes the constructs inside a neighbor’s outpost, so empty those before you move it.
  • Something is built on top. Move or recycle the upper piece first.
  • It is a fence. Fence segments cannot be relocated at all.
  • The new spot is invalid. Slopes, water and other buildings block placement. Try flatter ground nearby.

Moving Your Whole Base

You can move a whole farm, but it takes planning:

  1. Move the Farm Center. It can be relocated like any other Construct, and its Home Area moves with it.
  2. Lay out the new site first. 1.0’s Planning Mode, from the 1.0 building post, places holograms without spending resources, so you can sketch the new farm before you commit.
  3. Move storage early. Full storage can travel, so shift it first and your materials are waiting at the new site.
  4. Rebuild fences last. They have to be recycled and rebuilt anyway.
  5. Reconnect Water Reservoir pipes. The 1.0 patch notes say a fix shifted the Water Reservoir’s Output slightly, so pipe connections from an older save’s reservoir output stop working and have to be rebuilt.

The Exofarmer Jetpack flies freely inside Home Areas, which makes placing roofs and upper floors far easier during a rebuild.
