Zelda Majora’s Mask: How to Beat Majora

Official key art for The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

The final fight in Majora’s Mask runs through three forms: Majora’s Mask, Majora’s Incarnation and Majora’s Wrath. Each one wants a different approach, and if you have the Fierce Deity’s Mask you can ignore most of that and swing your way through.

Phase One: Majora’s Mask

The mask floats around the room trailing cords. It is invulnerable from the front, and the trick is that its weak point is the back.

Zora Link’s fins are the elegant answer. They behave like boomerangs, curving around behind the mask and homing in on its vulnerable side. Hit it, it drops, and you attack it on the ground.

Partway through, the four Boss Remains join in, circling the room and firing energy at you. Raise the Mirror Shield and reflect the beam back: a reflected shot destroys a Boss Remain outright and stuns the mask the same way a hit from behind does.

Phase Two: Majora’s Incarnation

The mask sprouts arms, legs and a third eye, then sprints around the room doing what can only be described as dancing.

This form is fast and erratic, and chasing it does not work. The reliable approach:

  • Stand still with your shield raised.
  • Stab it as it runs past, then close in while it is stunned and hit it with your sword.
  • Go back to waiting.

Patience beats aggression here. Running after it gets you hit.

Phase Three: Majora’s Wrath

It becomes muscular, grows a head, and attacks with whipping tentacle cords from its arms. This is the dangerous form.

Light Arrows are the answer: shoot it when it is not mid-attack, and hit it with your sword while it is stunned.

Later in the phase it throws out spinning blade traps that circle the room before exploding. These can be bounced away with your shield rather than dodged, which is far more reliable than trying to outrun them.

The Fierce Deity Shortcut

If you collected every mask and earned the Fierce Deity’s Mask, this fight changes completely. Fierce Deity Link’s sword beams stun Majora’s Mask from the front, skipping the whole positional puzzle of phase one, and the raw damage cuts the later phases short.

It only works in boss rooms, which is exactly where you are. Our guide on how to get the Fierce Deity Mask covers earning it, and how to get all the masks covers the collection it requires.

Before You Go Up

Bottled fairies revive you automatically and this is the fight to have them for. Stock up, and make sure you have the Mirror Shield and Light Arrows, because two of the three phases assume them.
