Bungie Lays Out Marathon’s Future: a PvE Mode, Team Deathmatch, a Social Space and a New Zone

Bungie published a roadmap for Marathon on September 24, 2026, and it starts with a Nightfall Refresh in early October, adds a permanent PvE mode and an experimental Team Deathmatch mode in December’s Symbiosis update, and ends with an entirely new zone in March 2027. The plan comes from Bungie’s “The Future of Marathon” post, signed by Del and Julia of the Marathon team, and its stated goal is to grow the game “beyond extraction.”

Why Bungie Is Changing Course

Marathon launched as a winner-takes-all PvEvP extraction shooter. In Bungie’s recent “Next Chapter” update, studio leadership said the game had strong critical reception but “did not reach as many players as we had hoped.” The new post is the detailed follow-up. It says new players found the game hard to understand, experienced players wanted clarity on its future, and others wanted more reasons to keep coming back. Bungie says PvEvP will stay, but as “one point in a connected set of survival experiences,” with options for solo players and crews and different levels of intensity.

The Three Updates

October, Nightfall Refresh. A focused update to progression, rewards and the live experience. Bungie also says it has moved away from strict seasonal releases, so updates ship when the work is ready rather than on a calendar.

December, Symbiosis. This is the big one for anyone who bounced off the PvP pressure:

  • Marathon’s first permanent PvE mode, which Bungie says it is still finalizing and will show before launch.
  • An experimental Team Deathmatch mode for lower-commitment competition without risking a full run.
  • An overhauled Perimeter zone, taken over by a fungal ecosystem, with new points of interest and a pinnacle encounter against the Tick Queen, Bungie’s largest combatant yet.
  • A new shell, Bishop, described as a fast melee “robot samurai.”
  • Better onboarding, plus a CyAc-sponsored social space with a built-in firing range for testing weapons and abilities.

March 2027. Bungie plans an interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP and PvEvP modes, a refactored Cradle with deeper shell progression, more questlines and narrative, new alien combatants, and an entirely new zone it is not showing yet.

What This Means for Players

If Marathon’s all-or-nothing runs kept you away, December is the update to watch, since it adds both a no-PvP mode and a quick deathmatch option. Treat the dates as plans: Bungie has said openly that it will set its own pace. This is the second half of Bungie’s reset, after it confirmed it is bringing vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns back. Our list of every vaulted Destiny 2 campaign, destination and raid tracks what is due to return. Bungie’s roots go back to Halo, covered in every Halo game in order. And if PvE with optional PvP is what you want now, Dune: Awakening’s single-player mode already works that way.
