Marvel’s Wolverine: How to Parry

Parry in Marvel’s Wolverine is L1. The rule that decides whether it works is the colour of the incoming attack: yellow Reckless Attacks are parryable and pay out with a lethal counter, ordinary attacks can be parried normally, and red attacks are unblockable and must be dodged. Try to parry a red attack and you will simply take it.

The Colour Rule

PlayStation’s own combat material puts it plainly: respond to Reckless Attacks, which flash yellow, with lethal counters. Those are the high-value ones, because the counter is a scripted, heavy-damage riposte rather than just a block.

Red flashes mean an attack you cannot parry under any circumstances. Dodge on Circle, or double-tap Circle to roll.

Worth knowing: the indicator colours are customisable in the accessibility settings, with separate colour options for the Parry indicator and the Dodge indicator. So if you have changed them, go by which indicator is which rather than by the colours described online.

Parrying Is the Core of the Game

This is not a game where dodging is the safe default. Parries build Rage, and Rage is what powers the Last Stand self-revive and eventually Berserker Rage. Stacking parries also staggers enemies and opens them up for follow-ups.

There is a hard number attached to how central it is: one trophy requires 500 parries, so the Platinum is effectively a parrying achievement.

Make the Window Bigger Instead of Lowering Difficulty

If your timing is not landing, the best fix is not the difficulty slider. The accessibility menu has Dodge/Parry Input Timing, described by Insomniac as setting the amount of time available to successfully dodge and parry enemy attacks.

Widening that window keeps enemy health and damage intact, so the fight still tests you, it just forgives your reflexes. Our accessibility guide covers the rest of those options, and our settings guide covers the separate Enemy Health, Enemy Damage and Stealth Awareness sliders.

Upgrades That Help

Two progression systems touch parrying, and they are separate, as our upgrades guide explains.

From the Adaptations board, Extended Parry makes parries succeed within a larger time window, and it is worth slotting as soon as you have the Strands to spare. Healing Parry restores health when you parry, and since you will parry more often than you dodge, it generally outperforms the equivalent dodge Adaptation.

From the Techniques tree, Advanced Parry lets Logan deflect multiple incoming melee attacks at once, which matters once groups start attacking in overlapping rhythms.

Who Punishes You

Practise on the slower early Reavers before the game speeds up. Shielded Reavers block most strikes and counter if you spam attacks, so break the shield with a claw charge rather than trying to grind through it.

The Hand ninjas in the Japan chapters are the real test: fast, punishing, and their sword strikes specifically limit Logan’s healing. Sentinels throw heavy attacks that want a dodge rather than a parry.
